WILK Friday BeerBuzz–25 Feb 2011 Southern Tier 2X IPA

WILKFridayBerbuzz15I’ve been drinking craft beer long enough to remember the very beginning of Southern Tier Brewing.  Back in 2005 we started to see a few beers like Phin & Matt’s Extraordinary Ale, and Southern Tier IPA coming out of the Lakewood, NY brewery.  These were good beers, but it wasn’t until we started to see the creative masterpieces like Crème Brulee, Choklat and Pumking, that Southern Tier really marched onto the craft beer scene.

Today we sampled Southern Tier 2XIPA.  There is very little information to be found about 2XIPA, so it was fun to sample the beer and try to pick out the ingredients of the brew.  I’m a big fan of 2xIPA, so it was even more exciting to hear that we’ll likely see more of it with the recent installation of the new bottling line @ Southern Tier.

2XIPA is a great hoppy beer so be sure to get out and check it out for yourself.  Southern Tier also makes a WIDE variety of other ales and lagers like Choklat, Pumking, Jah*va, Crème Brule, Krampus, Harvest, Unearthly, Gemini and Cuvee, and each one is unique and tasty!

Thanks

to  John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (25 Feb 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz15

Last week we celebrated the 24-hour arrival of “Spring” with our beach party beerbuzz.  We also sampled one of my favorite beers in Bell’s Hopslam.  This 10% ABV hoppy monster is not an easy beer to find, but it has a flavor and double-IPA hoppy taste that makes it well worth the search.  Find some and see for yourself.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This weeks brew comes from the north, or south and is twice what you think it really is.  And of course we’ll have a guest to help us sample!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–18 Feb 2011 Bell’s Hopslam

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3It’s been an amazing month of Feb on the Friday BeerBuzz.  We’ve welcomed some really great guests like Phil Leinhart, Steve Mashington, Brian Boak, and Chris Trogner…and some really great beers.  This morning we welcomed the 60-degree temperatures into NEPA with a special Beach Party BeerBuzz!

Not only did we have bathing suits and sunglasses, but also a really great beer in Bell’s Hopslam Double IPA.   I’m a big fan of late winter imperial IPA’s and Hopslam is one of my favorites.  Bell’s uses a unique and somewhat secret mix of six Pacific Northwest hops and hopping techniques, and a Simcoe dry-hop to get this 10% ABV brew up into the high IBU ranges, but then balances that bitter hoppiness with honey to even out the flavor.  It’s a balance that for me is unique among hoppy beers and this high-hop / dull honey mix has made it one of my favorites.

Hopslam is a big enough story on it’s own as a truly great brew, but there’s more.  Every year Hopslam launches in late January and quickly disappears off the shelves.  Hopslam has now become in my opinion, one of the most rare and sought after brews imported into PA.  Northeastern PA typically sees less than 5 cases total.  In the end for me the beer justifies the excitement, so be sure to sample it and decide for yourself….IF you can get your hands on some.

Hopslam is one of my all-time favorite beers and a brew that generates a lot of excitement every year.  It’s also a brew that fades fast so get some now and be sure to drink it fresh.  My apologies for the cross-up this morning.  Larry Bell was scheduled to join us for the Friday BeerBuzz live, but phone issues prevented that “connection” from happening on the air….so we’ll invite Larry back another time.

Thanks

to  John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 18 Feb 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Last week we had a fantastic guest on the Friday BeerBuzz to help us sample one of my all-time favorite beers.  Chris Trogner from Troegs Brewery joined us on the air to sample Nugget Nectar, to give us an update on the new Troegs Hershey facility, and to give us the scoop on the upcoming Scratch & Splinter brews heading our way.  All in all a very exciting show with one of my favorite brewers.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’re pulling out ANOTHER one of my all time favorite beers AND welcoming the brewmaster on the show as well….and once again I’d recommend that you DO NOT miss this hoppy-show!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–11 Feb 2011 Troegs Nugget Nectar w/Chris Trogner

WILKFridayBerbuzz7Over the course of 42+ Friday BeerBuzz shows, we’ve sampled a record four Troegs Brewery beers.  From our very first show when we sampled Hopback Amber, to our Scratch # 29 Special and our Mad Elf Holiday Spectacular, we’ve all really enjoyed the brews from our local Harrisburg brewery.  Today we were very excited to not only sample Nugget Nectar (one of my all-time favorite beers), but also to have Chris Trogner on the show to sample it with us.

imageChris is one of two brothers, that founded Troegs and brewed their beers, so he had some really great info on the past, present and even the future of Troegs Brewery.  Chris was nice enough to not only fill us in on the details of Nugget Nectar, but also chat to us about the new Troegs Hershey facility, the future of the Paxton St facility, and some upcoming Scratch & Splinter brews.  Stay tuned for Scratch # 41 (chocolate stout similar to #27) coming out TODAY and Scratch #42 (an abbey ale w/Chocolate nibs) coming soon!  A great guest and a great beer!…who could want any more.

imageNugget Nectar is a rare and wonderful seasonal brew, so get out there and try some before it’s all gone.

Thanks

to  Chris, John, Nancy, Joe, Deuane & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 11 Feb 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Last week we welcomed Brian Boak from Boaks Beer (Popmton Lakes, NJ) into the studio for the Friday BeerBuzz.  Brian started with a $25 Linens and Things Mr Beer kit back in 1999 and less than 10 years later, we’re sitting in the studio sampling his Two Blind Monks, Monster Mash, Double BW, Wooden Beanie, and a special version of Ice-Monster-Mash.  Amazing brews and and a message of hope for all home brewers out there wanting to take the next step.

I’d like to thank Brian, as well as Chuck Greenstreet from Stockertown Beverage for organizing the visit, and Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer for hosting a sampling night…we all had a great time and everyone enjoyed the Boaks beers.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’re pulling out one of my all time favorite beers AND welcoming the brewmaster on the show as well.  As an added hint, I’d say, “don’t miss this show!”

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–Brian Boak- Boaks Brewing Monster Mash & Two Blind Monks (4 Feb 2011)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Today we welcomed our special guest Brian Boak, brew-master and founder of Boaks Brewing in Pompton Lakes, NJ on to the Friday BeerBuzz.  Brian was in town to celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of Boaks Brewing and he was nice enough to bring along some of his special brews for the Friday BeerBuzz team to help him sample.

imageI’ve been a really big fan of Boaks beers for a few years now, and I still remember when we first received Brian’s Monster Mash Russian Imperial Stout as part of a beer-club event.  This is a rich, dark and Chocolaty Imperial Stout with just the right touch of coffee-like backbone….and while the 10% ABV may sneak up on you, there’s no mistaking the 100 IBU.

As an added bonus, Brian Boak will be holding a Meet-The-Brewer night tonight (Feb 4th) from 5-7PM @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer on Rt 309 in Wilkes-Barre Twp by the big cow.  I’ll be on hand to help Brian hand out samples so be sure to stop by and say hi and sample some of Brian’s beers.

Thanks

to  Brian, John, Nancy, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Normally I reserve this space for teasing the beer we’ll be featuring on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz….but not today.  We have a really great guest coming on the show, and since we let the cat out of the bag last Friday, I thought I’d use this space to fill you in.

This Friday at 8:30AM Brian Boak, brew-master and founder of Boaks Brewing will be joining us in the studio to sample some Boaks Beer on the Friday BeerBuzz (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).  Not only will Brian be joining us in the studio, BUT we’ll also be holding a meet-the-brewer event on Friday from 5-7PM @Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer on Rt 309 in Wilkes-Barre Twp @ the big cow.  Come out and say hi to Brian and help us sample some of his great brews.  See you there!
