Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 2 Sept 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz7It was a blast welcoming Steve Mashington on last weeks show to sample the new Yards Cape of Good Hope Imperial Pale Ale.  Mash is always a lot of fun and Cape of Good Hope was a really tasty beer.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint: This week we’re sampling a brew (maybe two) that will make you eternally hoppy and maybe a little sweet!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–26 Aug 2011 (Yards Cape of Good Hope IPA w/Steve Mashington)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Frequent flyers on the Friday BeerBuzz will not only remember the great show we did with Steve Mashington from Yards Brewing back in January of 2011.  We profiled Yards ESA, (asked Steve about his non-existent engagement)…but more importantly, Steve announced that we should watch for Yards Cape of Good Hope IPA to come out in bottles in the future.

Flash forward June 2nd, and sure enough, Yards received label approval for Cape of Good Hope bottles and COGH Ale kegs.  As promised we checked in with Steve again a month or so ago and found out Cape of Good Hope IPA would hit the streets in a somewhat limited release in Aug…so here we are.

It was fun to have Steve join us to sample the new Cape of Good Hope Imperial IPA.  Probably not as fun as the engagement joke played on us on the last show with Steve or even the visit to Yards to pick up COGH, but it was still a ton of fun having Steve back with this great new beer.

[image%255B6%255D.png]You’ll note that COGH uses the “I” in IPA as “Imperial” not “India” and for very good reason.  This is a big, certainly Imperial-level IPA.  Strong in ABV, strong in IBU and strong in flavor….but oddly enough the beer has a wonderful delicate mouthfeel that I’m pretty sure most people will really love.

Get down to Yards brewing Co in Philly and try this one for yourself.

Thanks

to  Steve Mashington from Yards Brewing, Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz-The Teaser 26 Aug 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Last we we let go of just a little summertime with Dogfish Head Festina Peche.  It was a great brew and a fitting way to bid farewell to the summer ales for 2011.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint: This week we’re bringing out a new, exciting, local and VERY LIMITED IPA…and of course we’ll have a guest join us to talk about it!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–19 Aug 2011 (Dogfish Head Festina Peche)

WILKFridayBerbuzz14It’s never easy returning from vacation, especially when you spend a week sipping great beers on an amazing beach…but what better way to return than to bring a great summer ale onto the Friday BeerBuzz.

This week I wanted to roll out one last summer beer, but in fine mybeerbuzz style…not just any summer beer.  This week we rolled out Dogfish Head’s summer seasonal Festina Peche.  This non traditional or neo-BerlinerWeisse as DFH calls it, is a really interesting beer.  Festina is a wheat based beer, and uses a considerable amount of fresh peaches, but don’t expect a sweet-peachy-wheat.  This is a BerlinerWeisse so it is tart or even acidic /sour to some palates.

imageBrewmaster Sam Calagione says he’s backed off the level of tartness by reducing the lactic cultures used in fermentation and bouncing up the amount of peaches, and I’d say he hit I just right.  Last year’s Festina Peche was considerably more sour and a lot less peach flavored.  This year the balance allows the fresh peach flavor to shine through without losing the tart/sour character a fine BerlinerWeisse should have.

Traditionally, a BerlinerWeisse would be served with the addition of herbs, woodruff syrup or even raspberry syrup.  According to Sam, Festina Peche doesn’t need that, so in find mybeerbuzz tradition, we decided to add some raspberry syrup to see for ourselves.  Naturally there’s a delicate balance as to how much to add, so if you try this yourself, be sure to test different amounts.  How Was It?  Well it was good, although the syrup did reduce the tart edge, perhaps even a little too much.

With or without syrup, be sure to try Festina Peche…it’s a great summer beer and I think Sam really nailed the 2011 version.

Thanks

to Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 19 Aug 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz14Last week we blew out some taste buds with Harviestoun Old Dubh.  This Imperial Porter aged in 30-year old Whiskey Barrels was a big and complex beer and one I said people would love or hate…so let me know where you come down once you’ve tried it.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint: This week we’ll hasten your way to a style developed in a famous German city!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–12 Aug 2011 Harviestoun Ola Dubh

WILKFridayBerbuzz15Today’s show was a significant change for the WILK Friday BeerBuzz.  Not only did we have a vacation filled week change our cast of characters on the show (Vince said it might be like this!), but we also made a change in our choice of beers.  For over 15 months of Friday BeerBuzz shows I have always made it my goal to find beers that unite people.  In other words I’ve tried to choose beers that people can agree on, so even if they didn’t love the beer itself, they would always agree that it’s a good brew…..well NOT today!

Harviestoun Ola Dubh 30 Year BeerToday I chose Harviestoun Ola Dubh as our beer of the day.  Ola Dubh comes to us from the Harviestoun (Pronounced HAR-VE-STONE) Brewery in Scotland and the name translates to Black Oil….and you’ll see why when you open the bottle.  Old Dubh starts with Harviestoun Old Engine Oil Imperial Porter and then ages that brew in whiskey barrels from Highland Park Distillery.  To get the various versions of Ola Dubh, Harviestoun uses barrels that aged the whiskey for 12, 16, 30 and even 40-years!  The beer (and I use that word loosely) comes packaged in hand-numbered and hand-signed packaging with a special box…and yes this beer IS special.

Ola Dubh
is not a traditional summer beer, and in fact it is about as far from a summer ale as you can get.  I like choosing non-traditional brews and I like challenging the palates of people in the studio and our listeners and this beer is a big one.  Big in ABV (8%), big in color (dark black), but most of all BIG in flavor.  As I mentioned above this beer WILL divide people.  Some people will love this dark black complex palate monster and some will absolutely hate it.  The choice is yours, but do keep an open mind; the flavor settle in after you sample more than one or three sips and do decide for yourself.

Whether you love it or hate it, Ola Dubh is an interesting beer so please let me know what you think when you try it.  A BIG thank you to our pal Vince Sweeney for going above and beyond the call of duty to join us today on the Friday BeerBuzz

Thanks also

to  John, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

WILKFridayBerbuzz15Last week we had a great time with our pal Damien Malfara from Old Forge Brewing co.  Damien was not only nice enough to bring up two more of his beers to sample, but also to tell us all about his new production brewery plans.  Cheers and thanks again to Damien.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week’s beer will divide people like oil and water and it is decidedly NOT your typical summer ale!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz - The Video Old Forge Brewing Co w/Damien Malfara

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–5 Aug 2011 (Old Forge Brewing w/Damien Malfara)

WILKFridayBerbuzz11Back in Oct 2010 we welcomed Damien Malfara from Old Forge Brewing in Danville, PA on to the Friday BeerBuzz to sample his Smashin’ Pumpkin Ale.  The beer was great, and Damien was a great guest…so it was only natural that we’d want to get Damien back on for another visit and to sample some more great brews.

[image%255B3%255D.png]I have to thank Damien in advance since he’s up to his ears in the opening of an Old Forge Brewing Co Packaging Brewery.   We brought you the news back in March, but it was a lot more fun to hear Damien describe the new facility.

Look for a new 20bbl brewing system to be in place (located at the former TRW plant on Market St in Danville) but I think I was most excited to hear a few things.  First off watch for 1[image%255B7%255D.png]6oz cans of Old Forge Brewing Co Beers to be released into our market.  Initially I’m expecting to see  Endless Summer and T-Rail Pale Ale(the beers we sampled today), but I suspect we’ll see even more beers in cans from OFBC as time allows.  You can check out the announcement here for Endless Summer and T-Rail cans.

I think what was most exciting to hear for me was the news that Damien would be using the original brewpub system to experiment and perhaps even brew some specialty 750ml bottles and even come barrel aged beers.  Very exciting news for Damien and for our local craft beer community….so stay tuned for some upcoming OFBC beers coming soon.

Thanks

to  Damien Malfara from Old Forge Brewing Co, Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 5 Aug 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz11Last week we reached out to San Francisco to sample a 21st Amendment Hop Crisis with brewmaster Shaun O’Sullivan.  Shaun was nice enough to not only join us to sample Hop Crisis, but also to get up at 5:30AM for the interview….and for that we thank him….now get out and buy some 21st Amendment beer!

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint: This week we’re staying local and sampling some new brews from a guest that’s been on the show before and been on the cover of a beer magazine before!
