Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 1 Apr 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz1

Last week we sampled Sierra Nevada Golden Bock as a way to say “Welcome Bock” to Nancy & John after their Caribbean cruise.  It was a really nice easy-drinking Maibock and one that will be finding it’s way into my ‘fridge more often.  It was also a really fun show, because it was our first show since the exciting announcement that the Friday BeerBuzz had won the PA Association of Broadcasters outstanding radio feature series…another fun Friday for sure.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week we have a big surprise, and if you thought our cider show was crazy, wait until you hear this one.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video (25 Mar 2011) Sierra Nevada Glissade

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–25 Mar 2011 (Sierra Nevada Glissade)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Back on New Years Day I made a beerbuzz resolution to bring you flavorful, easy-drinking, readily available and easily affordable beers on our show…and I’m proud to say I’ve found another great one.

We rolled through all of the great late-winter hoppy-beers, so as we enter the first full week of spring, I decided to bring you a traditional Spring Bock beer, and that beer is Sierra Nevada Glissade.  Spring bock beers are meant to bridge the gap between the heavy winter styles of beer and the lighter summer brews; so it’s a perfect time of year to enjoy a bock.  Glissade is a term used to describe a mountaineering technique of sliding down a snow-covered slope, and as Sierra Nevada puts it…”As winter begins its slide toward the sunny days of spring, we bring you Glissade Golden Bock to help you enjoy the ride.”

Sierra Nevada Glissade is a traditional Maibock, with Mai referring to “May” and bock simply referring to a strong lager.  Glissade uses very traditional spicy & floral German hops to balance out the European malts producing a well balanced and drinkable brew with notes of bread-crust and grains.

We should also note that my clue for the week referred to this as a “green” beer..and nothing could be more true.  Sierra Nevada is one of the leaders in environmentally friendly brewing.  Not only do they have one of the largest privately owned solar arrays in the US, but they are also very close to creating Zero-waste at their state-of-the-art Chico, CA facility.  Sierra Nevada is also about to opening their very first canning line, so watch for classic beers like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale to start showing up in a can.

Be sure to check out Sierra Nevada Glissade and try it for yourself.  Congratulations to everyone on the Friday BeerBuzz team for winning the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters award for Outstanding Radio Feature Series!

Thanks

to  Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz-The Teaser (25 Mar 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Last week we strayed a little off the beer-beaten-path and highlighted some Gluten-Free beer & ciders.  It was an interesting show to prepare, and based on the reaction we received, it was long overdue.  Hopefully we highlighted some great beverage choices to our gluten-free brothers and sisters.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  I know St Patrick’s Day is over, but this week’s beer is really green.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–18 Mar 2011 (St Peter’s Sorghum Beer, Doc’s Pear Cider & JK’s Scrumpy Solstice)

WILKFridayBerbuzz14Over 3.2 million people around the world of legal drinking age, cannot drink beer.  Many potential craft beer lovers, simply can’t tolerate a protein found in gluten that is prominent in the grains used to make traditional beer.  Not being one to accept that our Gluten-intolerant brothers and sisters can’t enjoy a brewed beverage the way we can…in fine BeerBuzz fashion, I set out to find the BEST gluten-free beverages available.

We’ve had a lot of requests to do a Gluten-Free beer show, and today was the day.  Now of course I’m not one to settle on just any old gluten-free beverage…I wanted to find some really great choices.  After a few weeks of research (yes it took weeks) I think I hit on three of what I would consider some of the best choices available in the gluten-free fermented beverage world.

Today I chose to sample St Peter’s Brewing (United Kingdom) Sorghum Beer (Pilsner style lager.)  This brew uses sorghum, to replace the wheat & barley traditionally used in beer and it is regarded by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ales) as well as the Gluten-free brewing convention as one of the best Gluten-free beers available….and better yet, it IS available in NEPA!

Now keep in mind if you are expecting this to be a beer that rivals some of the best craft-beer out there, it will not.  You simply cannot get all of the flavor and complexity with the limited grains available for brewing, but it is still a great easy-drinking and enjoyable beer.  Also keep in mind as this market grows, and it is growing…you’ll see more and more creative gluten-free brews.

I also chose to sample some cider today.  Like beer, cider is a fermented beverage and almost all ciders are gluten free.  Today I chose to sample Doc’s Pear Hard Cider and what is regarded as perhaps the best cider you can get, JK’s Scrumpy Solstice Cider.  These ciders are very wine-like in their texture and flavor, but also very beer-like in their fermentation.  These two ciders are also available in PA ad simply taste great!

To make things even more interesting, we blended some Sorghum Beer and some cider to make a really unique blend.  It reminded me of the Apfelweizen brews of Germany where a simple wheat beer is mixed with apple cider to make a refreshing summer beer.

If you’re in the gluten-free world or even if you’re not, be sure to try out these beverages and the various combinations you can blend.  Be sure to also read carefully if you are gluten-intolerant.  There are all sorts of claims out there, but be sure to choose beverages like the three I chose today that are Gluten-free certified….and finally…

I know we’re a beer show, and these are technically not traditional beers…but as I always ask of you every week on the Friday BeerBuzz….keep an open mind and try them for yourself.

Thanks

to  Joe, LA Tarone, Karel & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (18 Mar 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz14We had a really fun week last Friday as Joe Thomas, LA Tarone and I celebrated a traditional St Patrick’s day with a very traditional beer choice.  We sampled Guinness Draught and Guinness Foreign Extra side-by-side and talked about how classic and unique each beer is.  I have very fond memories of my bachelor party in Dublin, and the Guinness St James Gate brewery so it was really fun for me to highlight Guinness.  We managed to complete our first show without Webster and Nancy (currently somewhere in the Caribbean on a cruise) and I think we did a pretty good job.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week our beer is FREE!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–11 Mar 2011 Guinness Draught & Guinness Foreign Extra

WILKFridayBerbuzz7As we head into the traditional St Patrick’s Day celebration and parade weekend in Wilkes-Barre & Scranton, I wanted to choose a beer to pay homage to our Irish ancestors.  There are a wide variety of Irish beers and a wide range or Irish beer styles, but one and only one beer comes to mind when you mention Ireland and St Patrick’s Day….and that beer is Guinness.

DSCF0001In the name of full disclosure, I should say that I have visited the St James Gate brewery in Dublin and I’m a huge fan of Guinness.  I spent a week in Dublin exploring the city and more importantly, exploring their pub culture, and Guinness is at the heart of that culture.  Rising out of the center of Dublin, just south of the Liffey River is the St James Gate Guinness brewery & storehouse.  A massive 7-story tall brewery, museum, visitor’s center and pub (or should I say pubs).  At the top of the storehouse is the highest bar in Dublin called the Gravity Bar.  This all glass (including the floor) pub is to this day my absolute favorite place to enjoy a pint in Dublin.

Guiness3Today I chose the traditional Guinness Draught in the 14.9oz widget can.  To my taste this packaging comes closest to the draught version of Guinness.  In fine BeerBuzz fashion, I decided to bring in another curveball…and also sample Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.  This is one of Guinness’ newest AND most historical brews, with it’s roots dating back over 200 years.  The two brews are decidedly different and extremely tasty…so be sure to sample one (or more) of each for yourself.

A quick shout out to Joe Thomas, LA Tarone & Karel Zubris for filling in while Nancy & Webster are cruising the Caribbean.  You guys not only made today’s show easy, but also a lot of fun.

Thanks

to  Joe, LA Tarone, Karel & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 11 Mar 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Last week was a very exciting show on the Friday BeerBuzz.  Not only did we have a great guest with Brian Whetstone from Victory Brewing, but we also got to premier Victory’s new Headwater’s Pale Ale for northeastern PA…AND…share it all with you at the Krugel’s sampling event.  Quite a fun show and a really fun event….and of course a really tasty beer.

This coming week should be an interesting show.  For the next two weeks, Webster & Nancy will be away on a cruise, and they’ve left Joe Thomas and I home alone in the studio.  Tune in to see what we do !

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’ll be sampling a beer from a brewery that I toured all seven floors of myself.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–4 March 2011 NEPA Premier of Victory Headwaters Pale Ale w/Tasting Event @ Krugel’s

WILKFridayBerbuzz7We sample wonderful beers on the Friday BeerBuzz every week, but It’s not often that we get a chance to share that sampling with all of you!  This week we invited Brian Whetstone from Victory Brewing (Downingtown, PA) into the studio to help us launch the NEPA premier of Victory’s new, Headwaters Pale Ale.

It’s not only exciting to get the very first sample of a new beer hitting out area, but as I said before, it’s incredibly exciting to get to share it with all of our listeners.  That’s right…YOU get to sample it too!  Join us tonight from 5-7PM at Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer as Brian and I will be handing out the very first samples of Victory Headwaters Pale Ale in NEPA.

VictoryHeadWatersPaleI’ll admit I have a very soft spot for hoppy, easy-drinking Pale Ales, and Headwaters is right up that alley.  This is a beer that has a wonderfully drinkable flavor and body, and a very sessionable 5.1% ABV.  I think this is a great addition to the Victory Brewing line-up and one I look forward to enjoying again and again.

It was fun talking beer with Brian and hearing about 15th Anniversary of Victory Brewing, the green initiatives that Victory Brewing has in place and how Headwaters Pale Ale, as it’s name would suggest, is a beer brewed to celebrate the water that is used to brew it.  Headwaters is a beer with a conscience as Bill Covaleski, co-founder of Victory Brewing recently put it, and a beer that I think has a promising future.

Thanks

to  Brian (and everyone @ Victory Brewing), John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 4 Mar 2011

Last week we sampled Southern Tier 2XIPA as part of our cavalcade of great hoppy beers.  It was a fun show, and at 8.5% ABV, 2XIPA is a fun beer.   Normally I reserve this space to tease out next weeks beer, but since we gave it up already and since we have a great event coming up, there will be no teasing!

This week we will welcome our guest from Victory brewing into the studio to help us do the NEPA Premier of Victory Brewing's new flagship beer Headwaters Pale Ale.  This is a great NEW beer, and one we’re all very excited to sample…..BUT that’s not all.  Now YOU can sample Victory Headwaters Pale Ale too!

Join us from 5-7PM Friday night @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer where Brian Whetstone from Victory and I will be pouring samples of Headwaters Pale Ale from 5-7PM.  Come out and say hi AND be the first to sample Headwaters Pale Ale at it’s NEPA premier!

Tune in at 8:30AM and help us sample Headwaters Pale Ale on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).
