WILK Friday BeerBuzz–28 Jan 2011 (Terrapin Brewing Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3

Back in Aug 2010 we welcomed Brian “Spike” Buckowski (brewmaster for Terrapin Brewing) on the Friday BeerBuzz to help us sample his Big Hoppy Monster.  Brian was a really fun guest and of course it helps that Brian has been brewing some really unique beers.  Today I chose to challenge the palates of our Friday BeerBuzz team with an interesting combination of beer-styles with a new beer coming out or Terrapin.

imageMy beer choice was Terrapin Brewing Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk  Stout.  This is Spike’s 2011 new seasonal and makes for an interesting combination of a sweet chocolate stout that also uses lactose (milk) to add to the fermentable sugars (i.e. a traditional milk stout).  This beer uses cocoa-nibs and cocoa shells from the Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co to add to the flavor and complexity of this stout……..so it’s a Chocolate stout that just happens to be a Milk-stout.

I knew going in that this would not be a safe choice as a beer everyone would love, but I’m also aware that this is a great flavorful beer, and no matter what you ultimately think of it in the end, it is well worth trying….and you HAVE to love the turtle in the cow-suit!

This beer is readily available so get out there and try some.

Thanks

to  John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (28 Jan 2011)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3

Last week we had a really fun time with our pal Steve Mashington from Yards Brewing.  Steve sampled Yards ESA with us, and was nice enough to give us a little insight on some of the upcoming Cape of Good Hope series of strong IPA’s that Yards may be brewing in the future.  My thanks again to Mash for spending the morning with us.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’re pulling out a pretty interesting style that should be a real hooT and a perfect fit for our sponsor.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

Friday BeerBuzz–12 Jan 2011 (Yards ESA)

WILKFridayBerbuzz17I always enjoy having a brewery guest on the show that so openly loves brewing beer and talking about beer, that the beer-love shines through.  I also enjoy a really fun guest, so it was truly a blast to have someone on the show who embodies what craft beer is all about.  First off, Steve Mashington from Yards Brewing has a perfect brewing name (Steve Mash), but more importantly, Steve has a wonderfully contagious attitude toward craft beer.

Extra Special Ale

Back in June 2010, we sampled Yards Philadelphia Ale on the Friday BeerBuzz and it has become one of our favorites.  Today we sampled the beer that really got things going for our friends Tom Kehoe and Steve Mash @ Yards Brewing.  Yards ESA (Extra Special Ale) was one of the very first beers that put Yards on the map, and a really classic brew.  As part of my “BeerBuzz New Year’s Resolutions”, I’ve pledged to bring our listeners beers that are great tasting, easy drinking, readily available and easily affordable…and Yards ESA is a perfect fit.  ESA is a flavorful 6% ABV hearty amber ale with a wonderful balanced malt/hop flavor, and is one of my favorite Yards brews.

I strongly recommend you get out and try some of Yards ales and see if I’m meeting my resolution to bring you great tasting, easy drinking, readily available and easily affordable beers.

Thanks

to  Steve, John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz-The Teaser 21 Jan 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz16Last week we welcomed a brewmaster with local roots on to the show.  Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster of Brewery Ommegang and former Assistant Brewmaster @ Lion Brewery cam on the show to help us sample Ommegang Hennepin.  It was only fitting to have Phil help us sample our very first Saison-style farmhouse ale on the Friday BeerBuzz, and Hennepin was a perfect choice.  Be sure to try this beer for yourself.  It’s a great tasting, easy-drinking golden-colored ale that I know you’ll enjoy.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’ll welcome another special guests with a name that’s just perfect for brewing.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–14 Jan 2011 (Ommegang Hennepin)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4

Back in Aug 2010, the Friday BeerBuzz team helped me sample a beer that has become one of our all-time favorite show beers.  This beer was called Three Philosophers and it came to us from Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY…so I was very excited today to not only sample another Ommegang beer, but also to welcome their Brewmaster Phil Leinhart on to the show.  Phil is not only a part of the team that is responsible for the great brews coming out of Ommegang, but he also has some local roots.  Many moons ago Phil Leinhart was actually an Assistant Brewmaster for our very own Lion Brewery (as well as brewing at AB, Paulaner and Harpoon).

I think it’s always fun to have a great guest on the show, but when you pair that guest up with a great beer, it’s even more fun.  Today Phil helped us sample Ommegang Hennepin.  This is the first Saison/Farmhouse style beer we’ve sampled on the show and considering it’s one of my favorite styles, I’m amazed we waited so long.  Hennepin is a classic Saison with fresh citrusy hops, traditional Belgian yeast flavors and a subtle peppery finish.  A great beer and a great guest to be sure.

Phil also gave us the inside scoop on the brewery renovations going on at Ommegang and the upcoming release of the D’Achouffe/Ommegang co-brewed Gnomegang—coming in April…so stay tuned here for more details.

Be sure to try Ommegang Hennepin for yourself!

Thanks

to  Phil,  John, Nancy (we miss you), Karel (thank you for filming today), Joe (Happy Birthday) & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz-The Teaser 14 Jan 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Last week we paid tribute to our fallen beer comrades at the Abbey Saint Remy Rochefort Trappist Brewery by sampling Rochefort 10 Quad.  This is  a really good beer and a classic Trappist Ale among beer lovers and as much as it was sad to hear of the fire at the Abbey, it is reassuring to know the great brews they produce will continue on.

So what are we doing THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’ll be featuring a really special beer but more importantly a really special guest with ties to NEPA.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–7 Jan 2011 (Rochefort 10)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8It’s a bittersweet day on the Friday BeerBuzz.  While our featured beer of the day is an amazing beer, it’s troubling to know what’s gone on at the Abbey Saint Remy (Rochefort Trappist Brewery) over the holiday break  If you haven’t followed along, the Trappist Abbey brewery where Rochefort is brewed had a fairly serious fire on 12/29 that damaged portions of the brewery.  You can check out my posts and updates on the topic HERE, HERE or even HERE.

Thankfully, the brewery will survive and the beer will continue to be produced and packaged.  So far we’ve seen no shortage but stay tuned for a post later this morning on where you can get Rochefort beer in our area.

imageWe always seem to love beers based on the brewing style Belgian Quad on the Friday BeerBuzz.  Think back to Ommegang Three Philosophers, Breaker Brewing Belsnickler or even St Bernardus Christmas Ale….and you’ll see we love quads.  So what better way to pay tribute to our fallen beer comrades at Rochefort than to choose a true Trappist Belgian Quad.  Trappist beers are among the rarest and most flavorful historic beers available today.  Rochefort 10 is a classic among beer lovers and as always, I strongly recommend you try one.  They are a little more expensive than many mainstream beers (about $10 for an 11.3oz bottle), BUT Rochefort 10 is over 11% ABV, it’s well worth the price, it’s a very special beer to toast your friends and family and of course it’s a fitting tribute to Rochefort as they recover form the fire.

Get out and get some Trappist Rochefort 10 for yourself.  You won’t be sorry.

Thank you

to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (7 Jan 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8It’s a new year and a new and improved Friday BeerBuzz.  We’re rested and recovered from our 1-Hour Friday BeerBuzz Holiday Spectacular and we have a few New Year’s BeerBuzz resolutions to fulfill, so stay tuned.  We had a ton of fun with our pal Vince Sweeney and Dave & Teddy from AuRants on our 1-Hour holiday show.  We chose four great beers, two vertical tastings and an amazing deconstructed won-ton cigar dish that Dave prepared just for our show.  Add in a partridge in a pear tree and we’d have all 12-days of Christmas covered in one hour-long show.

So what are we tasting THIS week?  Hint:  This week we’re ringing in the new year with a hot and historical beer.
