Friday Beerbuzz – The Teaser (7/2/2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 Last weeks show was a lot of fun and I’m happy to start to feel comfortable being on the radio.  As is readily apparent, I have no background in public speaking let alone live radio….but again Nancy, John, Joe & Bosco make it  AND easy.  Hopefully the fun we’re having translates to the radio.

So naturally you want to know what we’ll be tasting this week.  I’m feeling generous so I’ll give you two hints.  Hint 1:  It’s the 4th of July Weekend…what direction did I go in for Memorial Day?  Hint 2:  I struggle every time to get this beer out.

Tune in and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.

Tune in this Friday  at 8:30AM on WILK (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com) and see what beer it is!

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 25 June 2010 (Breckenridge Vanilla Porter)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 I know I say this all too often, but this morning’s show was a lot of fun.  Way back on one of our first few shows Nancy asked if we’d be sampling a Porter, so we were overdue to finally try one…and today was the day.  I debated my choices between a traditional Porter style beer and a slightly less traditional Porter.  Because we’re still smack in the middle of summer (not the traditional time to serve a Porter), I chose the non-traditional style.

Today’s choice was Breckenridge Vanilla Porter.  Now all too often this beer gets confused with several of the Vanilla/Java porters on the market, which is a shame because this beer is not only distinctly different, but also very tasty.  It’s a very subtle difference between this beer and a regular Porter, but it does change the beer in a good way, without the overhead of the coffee flavors found in a Java version.

We also had a chance to talk a little beer history today and yes there is much debate with the origins of the Porter naming.  Some believe it is a mining traditional beer and some think it comes from train and river Porters in the UK.  I tend to believe both and really believe the tradition comes from the mixing of the three beers that used to go into creating a Porter.  Whatever the case this is a really wonderful style of beer and a beer that many non-beer lovers tend to like.  As some of my friends would say, Porters don’t have that “beer-y” flavor that some non-beer-lovers seem to dislike. In any case I think the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter is a fine example of a Porter and a wonderful beer.

So try it for yourself and let me know what you think, and stay tuned for more great beers coming soon.

So what beer should we taste next Friday?  You beer-input is always appreciated so please comment or e-Mail us.  Thanks to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Teaser (6/25/2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 Last week we finally hit a traditional summer German-style wheat beer.  I’m reasonably sure this was not everyone’s favorite beer, but I think everyone found it drinkable and an enjoyable summer beer.  I also think Stoudt’s interpretation of a northern German styled Wheat is pretty accurate, so I think we chose a fine example of the style AND a local brewery as well.

So what’s our beer of the week THIS week?  Hint:  This beer comes to us from the mountains and it was a style that Nancy has requested.

Tune in and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 18 June 2010 (Stoudt’s Heifer-in-Wheat)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 As we approach mid-June I wanted everyone in the studio to finally experience a full-on traditional Bavarian-style unfiltered wheat beer.  Rather than run out and pick up Weihenstephaner or one of the other German wheats, I decided to go for a locally-brewed traditional and seasonal wheat.  This is a perfect beer for summer and a perfect beer to sample yourself

Today’s beer comes to us from Adamstown, PA.  The brewery is Stoudt’s and our Beer of the day is their Heifer-in-Wheat.  So I’ll admit I love the name and it’s and interesting play on words for sure.  I’ll let you google “Heifer” and see for yourself ;)

Heifer in Wheat has the traditional tastes of, banana, clove and maybe even the mystical bubblegum flavor that I never seem to completely get.  Perhaps the bubblegum portion of my taste buds is broken, but I almost taste it in this beer.  I was also surprised to hear this beer is only a 50% wheat malt.  You’d never know it by the taste.

So what about show chatter you say?  We’re excited to have Beer Solutions on board and the show has been a blast.  Yes I occasionally get all marble-mouthed, and I occasionally still forget to breath..but it’s getting better.  I’m starting to really understand John, Nancy and Joe and that makes it a lot more fun.  We’re mapping out some beer-guests to appear in the future and I’m of course mapping out some good beers and some fun to go along with them…so stay tuned and see what happens.

So what beer should we taste next Friday?  You beer-input is always appreciated so please comment or e-Mail us.  Thanks to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Teaser (6/18/2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 Last week we sampled a pre-release Lancaster Kolsch in their first time can packaging.  The beer was an easy drinking summer style beer and the can packaging also made it an interesting story.  Funny to see what sort of questions I received, but I guess not terribly surprising.  Our top three questions of the week were, Where/How did you get the Kolsch ahead of the public?, You’re an Ale-Guy so how did you like it?, and once again…what did everyone on the show think of the beer?  It’s not a huge secret how I was able to get the beer, but it’s not necessarily something I’ll post just yet.  As far as me being an Ale Guy…Yes it’s true.  I generally like Ales much more than Lagers.  The Kolsch was nice as was the Steg Summer Stock so I’m still cautiously keeping an open mind toward Lagers, as I would expect all of you to do with the other beers I feature.  And as far as who liked the beer, I think everyone enjoyed it and perhaps Joe liked it the best.

As summer marches forward I started thinking about beer choices and appropriate beers for the show….so now you ask what will we sample this Friday??  Hint:  For the last three weeks on the show we’ve tasted a beer that was represented at Philly Beer week….AND this is true for this week’s beer.  Tune in and see what beer we move on to on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK this week…bringing good beers and good people together.

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 11 June 2010 (Lancaster Kolsch)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 Today was interesting for a lot of reasons, and I’m not really talking about my “marble-mouthed-morning.”  Yes I felt a little tongue-tied today, but the real story was our beer and it’s packaging.  Today we sampled a brand new beer and our second pre-release beer in 4-weeks.  The competitive me always like to be the first to cross the finish line and beer is no different.  I really enjoy being the first to get to sample a new beer AND the first to bring it to all of you.
LancasterKolsch
Today’s beer of the week was Lancaster Kolsch Summer Seasonal.  Now this is a big story on it’s own because this beer isn’t available to the public yet.  It premiered this week at Philly beer week and should be in stores soon…but for now we’re the first to get to try it.  The second big story is cans.  This beer is a golf, camping, portable beer and Lancaster even spells that out on the packaging.  Cans protect the beer from light and cans have a great environment story as well.  Turns out cans get recycled more and save roughly 6oz of gas per can in energy costs.

As I mentioned on the show this beer is brewed and packaged at our very own Lion Brewery.  I reported back in Nov on the removal of the Soaker at Lion and the end of their 16oz returnable production…which in turn made way for their new canning line.  I’ve seen the Lionshead and Lionshead Light in cans, but this is the first contract brew in a can I’ve seen come out of Lion…very exciting.

So how was the beer you may be asking?  It was a really tasty easy drinking summer lager.  Now I’m sure if you ask in the comments here or on WILK, Nancy John & Joe will be happy to reply, but I’m happy to report everyone really enjoyed today’s beer…which for me is success.

Try it for yourself (when it comes out) and let me know what you think, and stay tuned for more great beers coming soon.

So what beer should we taste next Friday?  You beer-input is always appreciated so please comment or e-Mail us.  Thanks to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Friday Teaser 6/11

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4

Well we’ve officially crossed over the one month mark on the Friday Beerbuzz.  With five shows under our belts, the show keeps getting more and more fun, and hopefully you’re hearing that on the radio.  We’re starting to talk about having beer-guests on the show and I’m really looking forward to that as well.  We’re also hearing from our listeners which I really like.  If you have a beer question, beer comment or show suggestions please e-Mail any of us ( webster@wilknewsradio.com, nancy@wilknewsradio.com mybeerbuzz@gmail.com ) and we’ll do our best to answer them, maybe even on the air.  You can also comment here on mybeerbuzz (comment link under every post), you can comment on WILK’s Friday Beerbuzz Page, and you can find all of us on Facebook as well.

This past w

eek we enjoyed a great gateway beer called Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale.  If you’re not a beer lover OR if you love a more mainstream beer, this may be the beer that is your gateway to liking craft beer.  Try it out and see for yourself.   We also had our first correct guess of our beer of the week when Josh guessed our beer of the week with just one clue….congrats and a beer to Josh.  So what’s this week’s beer hint?  Hint:  This weeks beer premiered at Philly Beer Week so you Can see on Friday why I chose this great local summer seasonal.  Tune in and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 4 June 2010 (Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 Memorial Day always marks the beginning of summer in NEPA, and with so many summer days to enjoy a beer ahead of us, I decided we should start sampling some summer beers.  Now mind you the term “summer beers” can mean a lot of things, but if you simply define it as a beer to enjoy on the deck or by the pool on a hot summer day, it’s easy to see what makes a good summer beer.

As I demonstrated last week with my choice of a big beer like Three Philosophers, you’ll find summer beers aren’t just about session beers….however…today’s beer IS a session beer and a great one at that.

My choice for our beer of the week comes to us from Silly-Philly in the form of Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale.  This beer has been rated by the NY Times (and by me) as one of the best Pale Ales in the country.  If you like a solid pale ale with a wonderful citrus-y flavor and superb drinkability, be sure to sample this beer.  The ABV for this beer is 4.6% which makes it a classic session beer, and what I suspect is a massive dose of Simcoe and/or Amarillo hops makes it an easy drinker.

YardsPPA

I love the fact that this beer comes to us from a local brewery, but I really like the fact that Tom Kehoe & Steve Mashington of Yards went out of their way to design a brewery that is environmentally responsible as well.  Yards is the first 100% wind-powered brewery in PA, they use all recycled glass & cardboard, they donate spent grains to feed farm animals and they even used environmentally responsible materials in the new brewery….AND did I mention they brew a great beer?

Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale is a beer you’ll want to taste, so be sure to check it out.

So what beer should we taste next Friday?  You beer-input is always appreciated so please comment or e-Mail us.  Thanks to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Friday Teaser 6/4

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 In case you haven’t caught on yet, this is the weekly teaser for the WILK Friday Beerbuzz show…and here’s how it goes.  I talk a little about last weeks show, and tease this coming week’s show with a little hint about what the beer we’ll be sampling this week…so here we go.

Our beer last week was a bit of a curve ball or as Joe Snedeker would say it was a real “back door cold front” of a beverage choice.  It would have been easy to line up a light, easy-drinking summer beer for last week, but with Memorial Day upon us I decided a big weekend deserves a big beer.  I chose Brewery Ommegang Three Philosophers and nothing says big like a 9.8% Belgian Quad blended with Kreik Lambic.

The show was fun and I’ll admit I’m starting to get slightly more comfortable doing it.  Of course it helped that everyone seemed to be pre-Memorial-Day-Three-Day-Weekend happy, but I think the big beer worked out….almost to the point that Joe Thomas was ready to sing, “I like Big Beers and I cannot lie…”

So what’s up for this Friday you may ask…well lets just say a beer that I believe listeners and readers will not only be happy they tried, BUT a beer that will find it’s way back into your ‘fridge again and again.  Hint:  This beer is a personal favorite of mine and actually has the name of the place from whence it comes in the name of the brew.

Tune in this Friday (6/4/2010) at 8:30AM on WILK (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com) and see what beer it is!
