Friday BeerBuzz - 2 Aug 2013 - The Teaser

FBBbeerbuzzbanner_v4 Last week we had a great time talking to Flying Fish founder Gene Muller…and an even better time saying FU to Hurricane Sandy.  Gene created Forever Ungrateful Sandy (FU Sandy) to benefit the NJ victims of hurricane Sandy, so it was an honor to sample the beer with him on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we we’ll be featuring a really historic beer with roots in New Hampshire & California!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.(103.1FM or wilknewsradio..com).

I’m sad to admit that we’ve made it over 170 episodes on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz and not featured today’s brewery.  After all, this was one of the first breweries I remember sampling at some of my earliest beer festivals, so my craft-beer-memories are very fond for their beers.

Hopefully we fixed that today by featuring Flying Fish Brewing Co on the show.  Coming to us from Somerdale, NJ, Flying Fish had a very interesting start in the brewing industry.  Started as the world’s first virtual brewery, Flying Fish hit the web in 1995 with a really cool site that drew in lots of media attention, and ultimately some investors.  A year later in 1996, the real brewery opened it’s doors and Flying Fish Brewing Co was born.

It was a real treat welcoming Flying Fish Brewing  founder and president Gene Muller on to the show today.  Gene not only founded Flying Fish, but is also eager to share his experiences & business lessons with other up and coming brewers.  Gene was at the helm when in 2012 Flying Fish opened their new brewery in Somerdale, NJ.  It was exciting to get the updates on the new brewery from Gene and it was great to hear that this new brewery has quadrupled their production and has become the largest brewery in NJ since prohibition.

imageWe didn’t forget to sample a beer today, and Gene was nice enough to send us a bottle of his new Forever Unloved Sandy.  This beer is actually named FU Sandy, and it is brewed to benefit the New Jersey victims of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy.  Gene has already donated over $45,000 to various charities involved in storm relief from the initial keg-only release, but with the 1000 cases of FU Sandy bottles he’s releasing now, Gene is hoping to donate $25,000 more.

FU Sandy is a hybrid Wheat / Pale ale that uses 2-row malt and white wheat malt.  This beer also uses an experimental hop called ADHA 483 that has never been used in a beer before.  FU Sandy has a great fruity nose and a wonderful silky mouthfeel making it very easy drinking.  Add to that FU Sandy benefiting such a worthwhile effort and you have reason to seek it out for yourself or buy some of the FU Sandy, T-Shirts, Hats & Pint Glasses.

Finally what Friday BeerBuzz would be complete without trying to pry some new beer info out of our guest, and it was really exciting to hear the latest news in the Flying Fish Exit series from Gene.  Stay tuned for the follow up for Exit # 16 - Wild Rice Double IPA.

Thank you to Gene Muller from Flying Fish Brewing, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another

fun Friday.

Last week we completed round two of welcoming a new Virginia Brewery into PA distribution as we spoke to Taylor Smack from Blue Mountain Brewing.  We really enjoyed the Kolsch 151 and Dark Hollow and it was especially exciting to hear what may be coming next form the Blue Mountain Barrel House.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This brewery has a familiar name, but the name of the beer is one that most people on the east coast would like to forget!

It’s a real testament to craft beer and a really positive note for PA as we see yet another great craft brewery start distribution in our area.  Prior to the last few weeks only some limited markets in Virginia were able to taste the beers we sampled today, and I’m excited to report not only are they now available in PA, but they’re really good as well.

Blue Mountain Brewery comes to us from Afton Virginia where it was started in 2007.  The brewery has a restaurant and brewpub with some great outdoor space as well as something unique…a hop farm!  With the desire to return Virginia to it’s former glory when it was considered the hop capital of the world, Blue Mountain currently has 400 Rhizomes of Cascade Hops and 100 Rhizomes of Centennial hops growing at the brewery.   As if that’s not enough…the first 150-pounds harvested each year go into a special fresh Hop Harvest celebration beer and much of the remaining hops are used in their Full Nelson Pale Ale.

With a name like a pro-wrestler, brewmaster Taylor Smack co-founded Blue Mountain Brewery after attending the Seibel Institute and brewing with Goose Island in Chicago at their brewpubs.  Taylor not only does some really unique and award winning beers, but he also manages to do something even more special.  Through the Blue Mountain Barrel House (founded in 2011), Taylor Double Thread brews, splitting the mash into two smaller kettles to make two different beers…many of which are then barrel-aged.  If I mentioned that one of his brews is named Double Barrel Aged Chocolate Cherry Bourbon Stout would you be interested?  I know I am.
imageOf course we sampled beer on the show today with Taylor.  Up First was Kolsch 151.  Named after Route 151 in Virginia, this beer is a classic Kolsch style lager that is clean, drinkable and it has a really crisp finish that will make you want more.  A perfect summer beer and I suspect it’s only a matter of time before we see this one hit cans.
imageWe also sampled Dark Hollow.  This Imperial Stout is aged in American oak bourbon barrels “still dripping with uncut whisky” for 100 days and you can certainly taste it.  The flavor is big and bold and at 10%, so is the ABV.  This beer is bottle conditioned, so if you can get your hands on one, lay it down for a few years and see how much better it gets.  I really enjoyed this beer and Taylor should be proud of the complexity and depth this beer has.

Be sure to get out tonight (7/19) from 5-7PM at Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer to check out the Blue Mountain Brewery Tasting event and welcome Blue Mountain Brewery beers into PA.

Thank you to Taylor Smack from Blue Mountain, John & Joe for yet another

fun Friday (we miss you Nancy).

Friday BeerBuzz - 19 July 2013 - The Teaser

Last week we reached down into the state of VA to welcome a new brewery into PA.  Starr Hill is not only the largest craft brewery in VA, but also the most award winning and it was easy to see why when we sampled Starr Hill Grateful Pale Ale & Northern Lights IPA with Mark Thompson.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we reach south again to welcome ANOTHER great new brewer to PA distribution!

We’ve been really lucky on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz to feature some of the world’s best brewmasters on the show.  Some come from famous well-know breweries and many are absolute rock stars in the beer world.  It’s also very cool to feature a brewmaster who is NO less talented and NO less a rock star in his own right, but he’s not a name or a brewery name that most people in the craft beer world may know…..YET!

Today we welcomed Starr Hill Brewing co-founder and Brewmaster Mark Thompson on the show.  While Starr Hill has been around since 1999 and while they are the largest and most awarded brewery in Virginia, they are just finding their way into our PA markets.  With distribution into PA that began in Sept 2012, and 19 GABF medals to his name, Mark Thompson & Starr Hill Brewery will soon be very familiar names and very popular beers in our area.

It was a lot of fun getting all the details on the original and new Starr Hill Breweries from Mark…and I’m always surprised how many Biology graduates go into brewing like Mark did.  It was even more fun to sit down with Mark and sample two of my favorite Starr Hill beers.
imageGrateful is a really tasty hop-forward Pale Ale.  At 4.7% ABV and with a lighter body than most hoppy beers, it’s really a sessionable beer.  This is Starr Hill’s new summer seasonal, and I expect we’ll see a lot more of it in the future.

Northern Lights is a classic west-coast American IPA with plenty of citrusy & floral hops in the nose, and a really nice flavor & mouthfeel to back it up.  At 6.5% ABV it may sneak up on you a bit, but it’s still a really easy drinking beer with a really well balanced malt/hop character.  I liked Northern Lights a lot and I suspect our local beer lovers will like both beers.
image
Be sure to get out to Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer tonight (7/12) from 5-7 PM for a special Starr Hill tasting event and see if you agree with me about how good Mark Thompson’s beers are.

Thank you to Mark Thompson from Starr Hill, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another

fun Friday.

It’s always fun sampling beer from our local breweries.  There’s something special about the beer being brewed so close to our turf, and it’s even more special when the brewmaster himself can enjoy it with us.  Last week we sat down with Mike Simmons  from Nimble Hill to sample a new beer.  Hop Bottom IPA had a really nice balance and a great hop-forward flavor and I suspect this will become on of there better sellers in the future.  Try it for yourself!

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week’s brewmaster has won over 19 GABF medals and he just entered PA distribution!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz - 5 July 2013 - Nimble Hill Hop Bottom IPA

FBBbeerbuzzbanner_v4
A little over a year ago we welcomed a new brewery into the Mehoopany, PA area and on to the WILK Friday BeerBuzzNimble Hill was a successful winery at the time and they were working to open a farm brewery on the property.  Owner Gary Toczko and brewmaster Mike Simmons joined us in the studio to sample 4 of their new beers and introduce our audience to the new Nimble Hill Brewery.

A year has passed and much has changed at Nimble Hill, so we were long overdue to have them back on the show.

Nimble Hill has upgraded their former small Sabco system to a 15bbl farm-style brewery….so output is increasing dramatically.  It’s also exciting to see their own hops harvested on-site finding their way into their beers and more and more of their beers finding their way into local bars & bottle shops.

Nimble Hill currently produces about 9 different beers, and we are happy to see more new packaging hitting the shelves.  It was exciting to hear about a really unique package coming soon from Nimble Hill….12oz Aluminum Bottles.  Based on label approvals I expect we’ll see at least 5 or 6 of their core beers hit this package so stay tuned.
image
It was also cool to get the info on what may be he first beer from Nimble Hill to be aged in Nimble Hill wine barrels.  Turbo Diesel is an Imperial Stout that will be aged in Wine Barrels and be packaged in 750ml bottles in the future.
image
Of course we sampled some beer today and I was really excited to sample the new locally named Hop Bottom IPA.  This beer uses 9 additions of Cascade and Centennial hops grown in Nimble Hill’s own hop fields and as an IPA lover I can tell you this is a really great beer.  This 7% ABV 70 IBU brew has lots of resinous hop and citrus bite up front and a well balanced malty finish at the end. image
It was very cool getting all of the updates today from Mike Simmons and I’ll be really excited to see the new 12oz Aluminum bottles hitting the shelves in he future.  Be sure to check out all of Nimble Hill’s beers TONIGHT (7/5) from 5-7PM @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer.

Thank you to Mike Simmons from Nimble Hill Brewing, Nancy, LA & Joe for yet another

fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz - 5 July - The Teaser

FBBbeerbuzzbanner_v4
Last week we took a little breather from our lineup of great guests to just sit down with the WILK Friday BeerBuzz team and  enjoy a great beer.  We chose St. Feuillien Saison, not only because it’s a classic beer style in a new modern slim can package, but also since it’s simply a great beer.  Try this one for yourself.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week a local brewmaster returns to the show with a new brew and the news of some exciting and unique packaging!
