Friday BeerBuzz 27 July 2012 - Blue Point Summer Ale

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–27 July 2012–Blue Point Summer Ale

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Every year my family heads to the beach for summer vacation…and while there are many traditions we hold sacred, one of our favorites is simply enjoying a beer on the beach.

I’ve long been asked what beer we take to the beach with us, but rather than simply list them out, what I think people are really asking is, “What beer should I take to the beach?”  So today I thought I’d take a run at answering that question.

Because glass is sharp and toes are still very soft, I first decided to limit my search to canned beers.  Not only are they safer, but at many beaches they are the only thing you can carry.  Since different people enjoy different beers, I also wanted to pick a beer that everyone from a craft beer pro to a craft beer beginner could enjoy while sitting in the sand.

imageWith all of that in mind I chose Blue Point Brewing Summer Lager.

Blue Point Brewing has two claims to fame.  1st they are Long Island’s only brewery, and 2nd (and perhaps most important), they are committed to freshness & flavor.

Located along the water and along the coastline where Blue Point Oysters were once harvested, their name is no surprise….and with a brick direct-fired brew-kettle, their beers are unique.

Summer Ale comes in a 12oz can and it has an easy drinking 4.5% ABV….important to anyone who plans to spend the day on the beach.  Summer Ale is an American Blonde style beer and it uses a partial wheat malt to keep the body satisfying and the beer refreshing and drinkable.  The beer is well carbonated, so pour slowly and you’ll see the golden color and pure white head.  There’s a little honey or buttery scent to the beer and it finishes with an almost lemony tartness.  Perfect for the beach and perfect for a hot summer day.  Try this one for yourself….and preferably…you should try it on the beach.

Thank you to

Nancy, John & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–27 July 2012–The Teaser

WILKFridayBerbuzz8I knew going in last week that we’d have fun.  First off we had two great beers, and based on everything I knew abut the marketing of these beers, our guest would have a great sense of humor.  Lucky for me I was right.  Jeremy Cowan from Shmaltz Brewing was a lot of fun talking to and a lot of fun sampling Hop Manna & Funky Jewbelation with.  Try these beers for yourself and see how fun they are.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This BeerBuzz week the team will finally get the point about what I’ve been trying to say all summer.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4
While there are so many great stories in the craft beer world, I think todays brewery & guest may have one of the best.  Back in 1996 Jeremy Cowan founded a little company called American Jewish Celebration Beer as a “Chanukah Experiment.”  He spent much of the next year hand-squeezing pomegranates to make beer and distributing that beer out of the trunk of his grandmother’s car.

After a lot of hard work an a fair amount struggle, Jeremy formed Shmaltz Brewing Co---maker’s of “The Chosen Beers”--He’Brew Brewing Beers and “The Freak Beers”—Coney Island Craft Lagers.  We should also note that Jeremy just released a new book that chronicles his experience starting Shmaltz called “Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah---a small business Memoir.”  Check it out for yourself….it’s not only an interesting beer story but an interesting entrepreneurial story as well.

Jeremy employs some of the most interesting marketing techniques for his beers including puns, side show freaks, Jewish pop-culture religious references and an abundance of Shtick!  Who wouldn’t love beer names like Rejewvenator, Jewbelation, Hop Manna and Genesis…and as it turns out people also loved the beers.

Blurring the lines of traditional beer styles, Shmaltz brewing has grown to sell over 10-million bottles in 31 states, Canada and even England.  The styles have become more experimental, and he’s even done a yearly co-brew called Reunion Ale with our pal Spike Buckowski @ Terrapin Beer.  As Jeremy calls it he is the founder & proprietor of “America’s smallest, largest most award winning Jewish Celebration/Sideshow Freak beer.”

It was a lot of fun sampling He’Brew Hop Manna with Jeremy.  Hop Manna is the 1st single IPA brewed by Shmaltz and it is loaded with the citrus & floral flavors I love.  This beer uses 6 different hops in the boil and 3 different dry-hop varieties so it is loaded with hoppy goodness.

Next up we were honored to sample He'Brew Funky Jewbelation.  This is the 6th beer in the He’Brew Barrel Aged Release and it is a 9.8%ABV amazing blend of 6 different beers..The 6 ales include Jewbelation Fifteen (aged 3 months), Jewbelation (aged 9 months), Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. (aged 1 month), Origin (aged 14 months), Reunion Ale 2011 (aged 7 months) & Messiah (aged 14-months)….and as if that’s not enough…73% is aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels and 27% is aged in Bourbon barrels.  To say this beer is loaded with complexity is like saying there’s a little water in the ocean.  This beer is loaded with oak, whiskey & bourbon flavors, complimented by brown sugar flavors, chocolaty, dark fruit, and even some grape/wine-like flavors….and of course the Funk!  Try This Beer!  Trust me…it IS 2 Funky 2 Fail!

Thank you to Jeremy Cowan from Shmaltz Brewing

, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser–20 July 2012

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4

Last week we sampled a perfect summer beer…Lancaster Strawberry Wheat….and what a blast it was to have brewmaster Bill Moore join us to talk about this interesting lager….YES it’s a lager and yes it’s tasty.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we’ll be rolling out the puns for the beer we’ve chosen…and of course the founder & proprietor will join us to talk beer.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–13 July 2012 Lancaster Strawberry Wheat w/Bill Moore

WILKFridayBerbuzz14If you follow along with the Friday BeerBuzz you know I like to fly in the face of traditional beers and I especially like to ignore the proper beer for the proper weather.  Case in point, last week we featured an Imperial Coffee Stout in early July.

This week I decided to not fight the trend and actually feature an appropriate beer for the appropriate time of year…and with the wonderfully warm weather we’ve been experiencing, I thought now was the perfect time.

Lancaster County PA has a rich brewing history.  Back in the early 1800’s, Lancaster County accounted for 7% of all beer brewed in the U.S. with an output of over 200,000bbl per year.  Unfortunately World War I and prohibition brought this all to a screeching stop, and even after both ended, brewing was never the same.

40 Years later the Lancaster Malt Mill opened and by 2001 it was purchased by Lancaster Brewing and beer finally returned to Lancaster, PA.

Back in June 2010 when we featured Lancaster Kolsch,  (Lancaster’s 1st canned beer) on the Friday BeerBuzz, so it was exciting to not only feature another local Lancaster beer, but to also welcome their brewmaster Bill Moore on to the show.  Bill has brewed for Independence, Sly Fox & even Stoudt’s over the years, so he has a keen insight as to what goes into making a great beer….and today’s beer is certainly a great one.

Lancaster Strawberry Wheat is a classic summer wheat with TWO twists.  First is the addition of Strawberry to this classic American Wheat, but the 2nd twist is actually even more interesting.  Lancaster Strawberry Wheat is actually a LAGER!  Yes this brew actually uses lager yeast to add a crisp and clean finish….perfect for a hot summer day.  At 4.8% ABV it’s sessionable, and with 16 IBU coming from Cascade & Hallertau hops, it’s well balanced and not overly sweet.  I’ve also given you a peek above at the NEW LABEL so watch for it as it appears on the shelves in our local market.

Thank you to Bill Moore from Lancaster Brewing

, John & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–13 July 2012 The Teaser

WILKFridayBerbuzz14We brought a unique guest on the Friday BeerBuzz last week…while she does have some expertise in “brewing” it was not exactly beer.  Mary Tellie from Electric City Roasting has a great palate fro sampling beverages.  Whether that it’s coffee or beer, she was dead-on with her descriptors for Flying Dog Imperial Coffee Stout and I can’t wait to have her visit again in the future.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we’re finally being traditional and choosing an appropriate beer for the season.  It also helps that it’s brewed by a local brewery in a town with a long tradition of brewing.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–6 July 2012 Flying Dog Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout w/Mary Tellie

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4
We’ve had a parade of brewmasters, founders, CEO’s and owners on the show and I really love getting to talk with each of them AND sample their great beers.  This week we decided to welcome a guest of a different kind into the studio and sample a beer that is right up her alley.

imageMarry Tellie from Electric City Roasting carries a level of coffee-knowledge that is unrivaled in NEPA.  Her knowledge of coffee selection, roasting and serving is an expertise we decided to take advantage of on the show today.

Mary knows coffee… and you’d be amazed at how many descriptors that are common for coffee flavors are also applicable to beer, so it was a tremendous amount of fun to sample a beer with Mary…especially when that beer has Coffee as one of the prominent ingredients.

Today we chose to feature a beer from Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick MD.  Flying Dog has a great history in the craft beer world and some amazing stories of the founding of the brewery.  Keep in mind founder George Stranahan came up with the name while on an adventure to summit K2 (the 2nd highest peak in the world.)  While in base camp at Rawlapindi Pakistan, George noticed a painting featuring an odd “Flying Dog” and the rest was history.
imageOur beer today was Flying Dog Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout.  This big 8.9%ABV Imperial Stout is loaded with coffee…and what perfect way to check Mary’s skills with what Flying Dog calls a “Secret Blend” from Black Dog Coffee (Summit Point, WV.)  Of course she passed with “flying” colors and also helped us with some of the prominent coffee flavors in this beer.  This beer is loaded with chocolaty flavors, a touch of toffee, earthiness and a prominent roasty background…with perhaps just a touch of vanilla too…and of course COFFEE!  Try this one out for yourself and be sure to check out Electric City Roasting coffee’s as well.

Thank you to Mary Tellie from Electric City Roasting

, Nancy & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

There’s something incredibly fun when we get to try a new beer from a local brewery.  Multiply that by THREE and you know last week’s show was a lot of fun.  Thank you to Larry Degreen for launching his LDB IPA on the Friday Beer Buzz.  Larry also brought is Purple Possum and his Pilsner and even stuck around after the show to help us launch Webster’s vacation.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we’ll be welcoming a guest of a different kind and sampling a beer that is based on her expertise.
