WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video 27 May 2011) Benny Brewing Summer Ale

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–27 May 2011 (Benny Brew Co Summer Ale & Amber Lager)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4We always love having a local brewer join us to sample some of their latest creations.  There’s something special about sampling a beer with it’s brewer, and I always gain some great insight into the beer itself.

Today we welcomed Ben Schoenfeld from Benny Brew Co back to our studio.  Ben joined us last July to sample the very first two beer he released to the public, Hopenstein and Wit, so I thought it would be a great idea to have Ben back to not only share another brew or two with us, but also to talk about how his first year in the brewing business has gone.

BennyBrewLOGOIn honor of Memorial Day and the beginning of summer, we chose to sample Benny Brew Co Summer Ale.  This is a light easy drinking Kolsch-style brew and a classic example of how great a summer beer can be.  As if that wasn’t enough fun, we also sampled Ben’s Amber Lager.  This too is a great easy-drinking beer, but with a heartier body and slightly darker amber color.

While Summer Ale is a draft & growler-only product, Amber Lager can be found at Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer as well as some of our other local beer shops…and of course at Marty’s Blue Room in Nanticoke.  Two great beers to kick off summer, so be sure to sample them for yourself.

Thanks

to  Ben, Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser–27 May 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Last week we sampled some great Anderson Valley Brewing Hop Ottin’ IPA, and tried our best to speak Boontling…although I will admit the beer is much better that our Boontling.  This is a classic west-coast-IPA meets British-IPA and definitely one to sample for yourself.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint:  This week’s brews and brewmaster has joined us before with his very first brew, so he’s making the ride again to wish us a Happy Summer.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Anniversary Video

Here’s the video we shot on May 13th from our 1-Year Anniversary party @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer!

20 May 2011

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video (20 May 2011) Anderson Valley Hop Ottin’ IPA

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–20 May 2011 (Anderson Valley Hop Ottin’ IPA)

WILKFridayBerbuzz14After last week’s Anniversary blow-out show and party, it was nice to join just the Friday BeerBuzz team and simple sample a great beer.

I discovered our brewery of the day almost 20-years ago, so it was an easy choice to bring you a brew from Anderson Valley Brewing.  Back in my early days of craft beer exploration, I stumbled upon an Oatmeal Stout called Barney Flats from Anderson Valley Brewing.  It was sweet and creamy and always a favorite, so I was really excited to bring in their classic IPA, Hop Ottin’ IPA.

imageThe Boonville, CA facility is of course located in the famous Anderson Valley, and the name of today’s brew comes from an old 1808 language the locals called Boontling.  Hop Ottin’ essentially means hard working hops, and this beer is exactly that.  It’s loaded with Pac Northwest hops but really well balanced with a hearty malt backbone.  To my taste this is just enough of a west coast big hop IPA with an almost British-style IPA malt character balance.

In addition to tasting a great beer, it was fun to talk about how environmentally and socially friendly Anderson Valley Brewing is.  From their 18-hole Frisbee disc golf course to their solar and wind powered operations, Anderson Valley Brewing is unique and a great destination if you’re visiting the area.  I should also note that while our beer today was bottled, AVBC is now now canning many of their beers as well.

Be sure to try this one for yourself and see.  It’s already becoming a Mrs. BeerBuzz favorite so it comes highly recommended.

Thanks

to Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video (13 May 2011) Weyerbacher Sixteen World Premier

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–13 May 2011 (Weyerbacher Sixteen)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7
Today our graphic is big because our show was big AND to remind you all about the big party TONIGHT!  Today we welcomed a very special guest into the studio to help us celebrate the 1-Year Anniversary of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Award Winning WILK Friday BeerBuzz..  In the studio today was our pal and Head Brewer for Weyerbacher Brewing, Chris Wilson.  Chris joined us last fall to sample Imperial Pumpkin Ale and the premier of Brewers Select Mike…so he was a perfect guest for our 1-Year Anniversary show.

imageToday we sampled the world premier of Weyerbacher’s new Sixteen anniversary brew.  We broke the news of Sixteen back in early April and it was a great anniversary gift to be the first people outside the brewery to sample this brew.  Sixteen is a dark braggot ale…an interesting mix of a honey-based mead and a darker malt so be sure to check this 10.5% ABV ale when you can.

It was also fun talking to Chris about something I’m very excited about…Project IPA.  Weyerbacher is brewing several different IPA’s in an attempt to find a beer worthy of replacing their long-time Hops Infusion.  Stay tuned as Weyerbacher makes each batch available for tasting and voting, ultimately ending in the choice of one favorite…and of course we’ll sample it on the Friday BeerBuzz.

Remember to come out tonight (May 13th) from 5-7PM @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli, next to the Big Cow on Rt 309 in Wilkes-Barre Twp. to celebrate the 1-Year Anniversary of the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK.  We’ll have Weyerbacher on hand with a sampling of their great brews and the entire WILK Friday BeerBuzz crew will be there to talk beer.  This event is open to all (must be 21 or older to sample beer) so be sure to bring a friend and stop by!

Facebook Event details
can be found HERE and HERE!

Thanks

to  Chris Wilson, Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video (6 May 2011) Wyoming Valley Homebrewers

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–6 Apr 2011 (Wyoming Valley Homebrewers)

WILKFridayBerbuzz10Almost every craft beer lover has wondered at one time or another what it would be like to brew their own beer.  John & I call it “living the dream”, but most craft beer lovers wonder about brewing their own beer.  Today we welcomed Chuck Yarmey, founder of the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers into the studio to sample some home brewed beers.  Back on Sept 3rd 2010, Chuck joined us in the studio to sample some home brews, and on that show the guys were nice enough to invite us to “design” some beers that they would home-brew and bring back on the show…and today was the day.  We “suggested” a Peach IPA, an Almond Porter, and a Chocolate Cherry Stout and they guys brewed some great beers for us to sample.

imageToday’s show was not only meant to show off how good home brews can be, but also to promote National Homebrewers Day on May 7th.  As part of that celebration the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers will be holding a brew day to contribute to the Big Brew.  The Big Brew is a collection of all of our national home brew clubs and their brewing of three official recipes designated by the national organizers all on the same day.

If you’re interested in attending this day-long event locally or even just observing some great home brewing, please checkout the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers website for details.  It’s an exciting event and a great opportunity to check out what home brewing is all about….and yes I plan to be there myself for part of the day.

Thanks

to  Chuck & all the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers who contributed beers for today’s show, and to Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.
