WILK Friday BeerBuzz - 26 Apr 2013 Fegley’s Brew Works Space Monkey w/Beau Baden

FridayBeerBuzzBus4
It’s been way too long since our pal (and local native) Beau Baden visited the WILK Friday BeerBuzz.  We always enjoy having Beau on the show and of course we love the Brew Works beers that he always brings.

When we were planning our Spring 2013 Tour de Buzz III bus trip, we quickly realized that Brew Works would not only be a great destination, but we knew we’d have a great time sampling their beer AND getting some private tours from Beau himself.  For anyone who is joining us on the bus trip tomorrow, you’re in for a real treat.

It seems like just yesterday that Brew Works opened their doors, so it was exciting to talk with Beau about the Brew Works 15th anniversary celebrations as well as the specialty beer they brewed.  Congratulations to everyone at Brew Works!

It was also exciting talking to Beau about the “Brewer for a Day” contest winning beer that local Wyoming Valley homebrewer Mike Sexton got to brew on the Brew Works equipment.  It sounds like it was a really fun day and a really great Black Rye IPA.

No Friday BeerBuzz would be complete without sampling a beer…so today we chose to sample one of my Brew Works favorites…Space Monkey.  This beer is a wonderful raspberry saison that has a refreshing clean tart bite with the smooth finish of a traditional farmhouse ale.  At 7% ABV this beer can be a little sneaky, but don’t let the raspberry fool you.  Space Monkey is a semi sweet 25 IBU, but it does contain Nugget, EKG & Czech Saaz hops.  This is a great summer beer and a really pleasant brew.

Thank you to Beau Baden from Fegley’s Brew Works, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another

fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz - 26 Apr 2013 - The Teaser

FridayBeerBuzzBus4
This is a bit of an odd teaser post.  Normally we reflect on last week’s show and tease this weeks show.  Unfortunately, our show last week was preempted to allow WILK to devote all of their resources to the manhunt for the Boston bombing suspect.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Boston.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: Anyone paying attention knows what we’re doing this week, even without the photo above.

Last week we welcomed Chris Brugger from Otto’s Pub & Brewery and had a great time talking beer and sampling his Apricot Wheat and Slab Cabin IPA.  Otto’s is a great State College destination and a favorite stop of mine for both beer and food, so be sure to check it out.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we welcome a brewer from two breweries and with two beers and yes one is crushable.

We love featuring Pennsylvania breweries on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz, but for some reason we haven’t represented the breweries to our west quite as well.  And after enjoying a beer that’s just hitting NEPA a few weekends ago, I realized we’ve had a glaring omission on the show.

Back in 2002 Otto’s Pub & Brewery opened their doors in State College.  Started by PSU grad Charlie Schnable, Otto’s became the first brewpub in the State College area and a very successful brewpub at that.  Coincidentally I was able to sample Otto’s IPA that very same year at the Split Rock beer festival, and to this day I recall it as being one of the best beers at the fest that year…no small feat for an IPA guy like me.

Prior to even celebrating their 10th anniversary, Otto’s celebrated their rapid growth by opening an all new brewpub in 2010.  Armed with more seats and more parking (an issue at their previous location) Otto’s embarked on a new venture expanding their beer and food menus as well as creating a space for a PA Brewing History display at the pub.  If you get a chance to browse the collection at the pub you’ll see a great display of local brewing history and some really cool artifacts.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2012, Otto’s was again expanding to add additional brewing space and an outdoor patio….effectively doubling their brewing capacity.

Today we were excited to talk to Brewer Chris Brugger.  Chris had some great insight into the brewing equipment and capacity of Otto’s and it was exciting to hear the details of their bottling line and some of their future plans and brews…and of course we sampled some great Otto’s brews.

With summer on the horizon, I wanted to start with what I consider the Otto’s summer flagship beer, Apricot Wheat.  This 4.7% American wheat is one of my favorite Otto’s brews and I really enjoy the delicate apricot flavor and clean finish…and what Friday BeerBuzz show would be complete without an IPA?  So today we sampled Otto’s Slab Cabin IPA.  This hoppy brew uses Nugget, Palisade & Amarillo hops and comes marching in at a pleasant 6.3% ABV.

These are great beers and with the move to 12oz bottles I suspect we will see more and more brews in NEPA.  For those seeking out the beer, I checked earlier this week and Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer not only has Apricot Wheat and Slab Cabin IPA, but also Red Mo and Double D IPA…so be sure to stop up and check them out.

Thank you to Chris Brugger from Otto’s Pub & Brewery, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another

fun Friday.

Last week we had a great time welcoming Chris & Mark from Breaker Brewing into the studio.  In what is perhaps the all-time record for polishing off a growler, we all really enjoyed the Phoebe Snow White IPA.  This brew is a unique twist on an IPA using Belgian yeast, and it’s a really nice beer for summer as well.  It was also an honor to be able to break the news that the Breaker Brewing Co Tap Room is about to open.  Stay tuned to the Breaker Brewing FaceBook page for the updates but it is very likely to be this week!

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we’re not crossing any borders, but we’re reaching out to a special “state” to welcome our brewmaster on the show.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz - 5 Apr 2013 Breaker Brewing Phoebe Snow White IPA w/Mark Lehman & Chris Miller

WILKFridayBerbuzz15It’s been WAY too long since our last visit from Mark Lehman & Chris Miller from Breaker Brewing.  Mark & Chris have been friends of the show from the very beginning, and we all feel like we’re a part of the Breaker Brewing Family….so today’s show was LONG overdue.

We’ve been following along as Mark & Chris have worked to open their new facility on Northampton St in Wilkes-Barre Twp.  From the multiple zoning hearings to the preparation of the brewery, it’s been a long ride…and when I say “work” I can’t express just how hard working these guys are.  From digging and pouring their own basement floors to hand building the taproom bar, Mark and Chris have broken their collective backs to build this brewery….and I’m excited to report it’s ready!

It was a lot of fun getting the latest updates from Mark & Chris on the progress (and completion) of the brewery and the opening of the taproom.  As I said when I stood in the old school house the first week after they purchased the building, I cannot wait to sit at the taproom bar and raise a glass to how far Breaker Brewing has come, and it was exciting to mark that milestone with the guys today.

And what toast would be complete without a great Breaker Brewing beer.  Today we chose to sample Phoebe Snow White IPA, and we clearly made a great choice.  Phoebe Snow is named after a 1900’s advertising campaign for Anthracite Coal powered railroad engines.  Phoebe was always featured in a white dress to highlight how clean the Anthracite Coal of Northeastern PA burned, and she’s the perfect mascot for Phoebe Snow White IPA.  Clean, crisp and easy drinking, this White IPA is loaded with citrusy hops and it’s backed nicely by the balancing malt character.  This beer uses a Belgian yeast so the bready & earthy flavors are there, and I really like how the hops set that flavor off.

Congratulations to Mark & Chris and to all of their families and friends for all of the hard work they have put into literally building a brewery by hand.  I’m also excited to invite each and everyone to stop by and congratulate them in person over a pint of Breaker Brewing beer.

Thank you to Mark Lehman & Chris Miller from Breaker Brewing, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another

fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz - 5 Apr 2014 - The Teaser

WILKFridayBerbuzz15We took a week off on the Friday BeerBuzz for Good Friday and while it was a nice break from waking up early on Friday morning, I’ll admit I missed our weekly fun fest.  In any case we had a blast 2 weeks ago talking with Matt Smith from Clown Shoes.  We sampled some great beers and of course we talked about the beer names.  Get out and try these beers for yourself.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we’re bring out our best white dress and welcoming in some local friends.
