WILK Friday BeerBuzz–24 Feb 2012 Marley’s Tire Chaser IPA w/Mark Braunwarth

WILKFridayBerbuzz10

We’re lucky enough to get to talk to many local brewmasters, but today’s guest made his first visit to the Friday BeerBuzz studios today, and we were glad he did.

About a year ago I started hearing word that a brewery was being planned in Bloomsburg, and sure enough the details came flying in shortly thereafter.  The doors at Marley’s Brewery & Grille on Main St in Bloomsburg officially opened on Feb 10th last year.  At that time they had 4 regular beers on tap, and one specialty brew.  Over the course of a year the menu at Marley’s has expanded…and so has the beer selection…with 10 different beers pouring at most times.

Today we were lucky enough to have brewmaster Mark Braunwarth join us to sample some of his beer.  I always like sampling a brewery’s core beers, but the specialty beers are even more fun.  Mark was nice enough to bring us his Tire Chaser IPA today and we really enjoyed this west-coast style IPA.  It had lots of great citrusy-hoppy flavor and just the right amount of Falconer’s Flight hops (one of my favorites).  As IPA’s go, this is actually an easier-drinking 6% ABV and 62 IBU, but it is full of flavor.

We also LOVED the Dog House Double IPA and it was a great contrast trying both together.

There’s nothing like sampling a new beer with the guy that brewed it, and today was no different.  Mark was not only nice enough to share some of Marley’s newest specialty beers, but also sample them while with us while he filled in the beer-details.  Marley’s has a variety of beers from Scotch Ales, to Kolsch and quite a few styles in between.  The food is also incredible so be sure to stop down and try the beers & food for yourself.

Thank you to Mark Braunwarth from Marley’s Brewery & Grille

, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 24 Feb 2012

WILKFridayBerbuzz10

Last week we had a fun time hanging out with Brian Boak from Boak’s beer to celebrate his 4th anniversary.  The beers were fantastic and the crowd that showed up at Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer to help us was amazing.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week our brewmaster will only be driving 45-minutes to visit the studio to help us sample his brews!

Friday BeerBuzz The Video–17 Feb 2012 Boaks Wooden Beanie w/Brian Boak

WILK Friday BeerBuzz 17 Feb 2012 Boaks Beer w/Brian Boak

WILKFridayBerbuzz9A little over a year ago we welcomed Brian Boak into the Friday BeerBuzz studio to sample one of my favorite Boak’s Beers…Monster Mash.  We had a great time and actually sampled several of Brian’s beers including Double BW, Two Blind Monks and even a NEW & special version of Abbey Brown aged in Jack Daniels barrels called Wooden Beanie.

Jump forward a year and Brian was back in the studio to celebrate his 4th Anniversary and to sample some more great Boak’s beer with us.  Brian began his home brewing career with a store-bought Mr. Beer kit in 1999 and gradually grew his brewing skills and equipment size until he opened Boaks Beer in Jan 2008.  He brews the beer styles he himself likes, so he has an interesting array of great styles.

imageA lot has changed in 4-Years for Brian and Boak’s Beer, but one thing that hasn’t changed is how tasty his beers are.  We sampled an updated version of Wooden beanie and it tastes even better a year later.  This beer starts with Abbey Brown Ale and ages it with Madagascar vanilla beans in Jack Daniels barrels, and the flavor is great.

It was also exciting to sample Brian’s other new creations and a lot of fun seeing how much the business has grown.  Stay tuned as we watch Boak’s Beer grown and watch for new Boak’s beers coming soon.

As an added bonus, Brian Boak will be holding a Meet-The-Brewer night tonight (Feb 17th) from 5-7PM @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer on Rt 309 in Wilkes-Barre Twp. by the big cow. I’ll be on hand to help Brian hand out samples so be sure to stop by and say hi and sample some of Brian’s beers.  Brian will also be appearing at Backyard Ale House tonight beginning at 8PM so be sure to stop out and say hi.

Thanks

to Brian Boak from Boak’s Beer, John, Nancy, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 17 Feb 2012

WILKFridayBerbuzz9It was really fun tasting 16-Mile Brewing Co beers with Claus Hagelman last week.  It’s also a lot of fun to talk to Claus about the growth going on and the changes coming up for 16-Mile in the future.  If you haven’t tried a 16-Mile beer yet, be sure to do so soon.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we’re welcoming back a brewery who visited the show last year, and we’ll be helping him celebrate a monstrous anniversary from 5-7PM Friday!

Friday BeerBuzz The Video–16 Mile Responders Ale w/Claus Hagelman

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–10 Feb 2012 16-Mile Brewing Responders Ale w/Claus Hagelman

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Week after week the Friday BeerBuzz brings you great new beers and exciting new breweries.  I’m always amazed at just how many great craft-beer people we get to meet; how they always have a great story to tell and of course a great beer to share.

Today we welcomed Claus Hagelman from 16-Mile Brewing on the show. For those unfamiliar, 16-Mile is an up and coming brewery in Georgetown DE and Claus is 16-Mile’s Sales & Marketing Director…and I should add…a great guest.

While 16-Mile is new to Northeastern PA, they are doing really well in their existing markets and already expanding the brewery. Claus helped open their new tavern at the end of January and the brewery itself is doubling in size. This should allow them to grow from their current 15bbl system and 30bbl fermenters, and I expect we’ll see some new beers as well.

While many that know 16-Mile remember them for their original 22oz aluminum bottle packaging, they have now switched to the more traditional 12oz bottles and it was fun talking to Claus about that change and even more fun sampling their beers.

Claus told us the story of his Responders Ale and I think it’s fantastic to see that $3 from every case and $5 from every keg is donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation….especially in a state where the fire departments are 90% volunteer (including their state capital.) This is a VERY sessionable 4% ABV American Golden Ale with lots of flavor and a crisp clean finish. It was also exciting to sample the non-traditional Old Court Dark Pale Ale. This beer is pretty unique and the hoppy/malty balance is very pleasing and a flavor profile you should definitely check out.

It was a lot of fun sampling 16-Mile brews with Claus and be sure to get out and try these for yourself.

Thank you to Claus Hagelman from 16-Mile Brewing

, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 10 Feb 2012

WILKFridayBerbuzz8I’ll admit I always look forward to trying a new hoppy beer, and since Double-IPAs are one of my favorite styles, I was excited to talk to Shane Welch from Sixpoint Craft Ales AND sample his great new Resin DIPA.   We had a lot of fun and Shane’s got a good one here so try it for yourself.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: There’s a Number in the name but this one is only a few miles further than last week!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–3 Feb 2012 Sixpoint Resin DIPA w/Shane Welch

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Every week we welcome a great guest on the Friday BeerBuzz and every week I’m amazed at how passionate our guests are about not only their own beer, but also about craft beer in general.

Back in December I crossed paths with today’s guest in Northeastern PA and after talking for only 5-minutes, I knew he’d be a great guest.  Shane Welch is the President of Sixpoint Craft Ales in Brooklyn and a great spokesman for craft beer.  Earlier that day I had just published 15+ NEW Sixpoint keg label approvals, and I joked with Shane asking if they were all actually real beers or just placeholders for a future brew.  I should have known better!  Of course they were all real and of course there were even more beers to follow that week.

It was great talking to Shane about the origins of Sixpoint Craft Ales, and about the originals of their six-pointed star logo.  Who knew that the 6-point star was a early mark for craftsmanship in brewing?  I think it’s a perfect fit AND a great story.

image
The Friday BeerBuzz crew are all professional hoppy-beer lovers…so it was an easy choice when we were choosing a Sixpoint beer.  Sixpoint Resin DIPA is brand spanking new and at 9.1%ABV & 103 IBU it is right up our alley.  Loaded with classic hops like Columbus, Simcoe, Amarillo, Centennial, Cascade, & Chinook; Resin tastes just like it’s name BUT it has a decidedly malty backbone which is pleasant and rare for a DIPA.  Packed with resinous hops and loaded with great malty flavor…it has a wonderful balance.  Resin is one of new Brewmaster Jan Matysiak first brews at Sixpoint and I think it came out great.  It’s also interesting that Resin is packaged in 12oz skinny-tall cans.  It’s a great package and holds JUST the right amount of beer, especially for such a big beer.

Sixpoint Craft Ales will soon be imported into PA so stay tuned AND try this one for yourself.

Thanks

to Shane Welch from Sixpoint Craft Ales, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz – The Teaser 3 Feb 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Last week we had a great time waking up Mattson Davis at 3:30AM.  We felt a little less guilty that Kona Brewery CEO & President was waking up early in Hawaii, but we still thank him for going above & beyond the call of craft beer duty to join us live from Hawaii to sample Kona Koko Brown.  Thanks again Mattson.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This week we have eat another brewery President joining us….and he too is JUST about to enter the PA craft-beer market!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).
