Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (1 July 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8On last week’s show we had a great time sampling Alpha Deuce IPA and some other great brews from Bart Rieppel, brew master from River House Brewpub in Milton, PA.  Bart is doing some great things and the food looks amazing so be sure to stop up and check it out.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint:  This week’s beer not only comes from the same brewery, but they also seem to have wrapped up a beer very close to what may be one of my all-time favorite brews.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–24 June 2011 (Mr. Beer - American Devil IPA)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8So I’ll admit up front that my teaser from last week may have been a little misleading…but it was all in the name of good fun.  A few months ago the Mr. Beer company was nice enough to contact me and offer to send me a Mr. Beer brewing kit to try out for myself.  Yes in the name of full-disclosure, the kit was free, but the experience was a lot of fun and the results were exciting….so I definitely wanted to share the story and the beer with our audience.

The process was really simple.  You can check out the postingIMG_2911 from my Brew Day Here, and my Bottling Day Here….and I thought what better way to discuss the actual tasting of my Mr. Beer than to do the sampling live on the radio!

MrBeerBrewDayOne 002Mr. Beer has really made the process of brewing a beer, simple, fun and really welcoming to someone just starting out, and surprisingly enough, the beer tastes good.  There are certainly limitations with this sort of brewing, but while you may not be brewing a GABF award winning beer in Mr. Beer, you are learning a lot about the process and perhaps even using it as a stepping stone toward all-grain brewing someday.

IMG_2908My beer was called American Devil IPA, and I added some fresh Nugget and Cascade hop cones from my 2010 harvest at the end of the boil and left them in through fermentation.  While I think the effect was minimal, it was fun to tweak the recipe a little for my preferences, as you can with all Mr. Beer kits.

IMG_2910So how did it taste?  Well it actually was a very good and drinkable beer.  The hop levels and ABV are pretty tame for an “IPA”, but the flavor was solid and the color and clarity perfect.  So try it out for yourself.  Mr. Beer brewing kits are available on-line and many retail locations, and keep in mind our previous guest Brian Boak from Boak’s Beer started his brewing career, on a Mr. Beer.

Thanks

to  Julianna Contreras from Mr. Beer, Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 24 June 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz8It’s always fun meeting one of our new local brewmasters so we had a great time last week welcoming Bart Rieppel from River House to our studio, and to our family of local brewers.  Bart’s really been brewing some interesting beers and I thank him again for coming up last week to sample with us.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint:  We’ll marching in a pretty interesting 1-liter bottle to sample a beer only two people in the world have ever tried.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–The Video 17 June 2011 (Riverhouse Brewpub)

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–River House Brewing Co (Alpha Deuce IPA & Strawberry Wheat)

WILKFridayBerbuzz15I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I really enjoy meeting new local brewers and sampling their beers.  We always get great insight into the beer, some interesting facts about hot it’s brewed and some great tasting notes about the flavors and ingredients involved.

For today’s show we welcomed Bart Rieppel brewmaster from The River House Brewpub in Milton PA.  River House is a relatively new brew pub that just opened up along the Susquehanna river across from Lewisburg.  River House not only features 8-10 beer brewed in-house by Bart, but also really great, predominantly-Italian cuisine by Mancino.  Bart also has a really great pub club that gets you great deals on beer and exclusive brewpub event invitations as well….so be sure to stop down and have a pint.

imageBart was nice enough to bring up his flagship brew, Alpha Deuce Imperial IPA, along with his NEW Strawberry Wheat for us to sample.  Alpha Deuce is a relatively big beer at 7.5% ABV, but it’s easy drinking hoppy-character easily hide any boozy flavors you might expect.  Alpha Deuce is loaded with citrus flavor with just enough malt to balance it out.  This is the flagship beer for the new River House brewpub and I can see why.  The new Strawberry Wheat was a delicious summery wheat beer that I can really picture enjoying out on the deck or next to the pool (if I had one.)  It’s an easy drinking brew with just enough Strawberry flavor to accent the character of the wheat, and just the right body and ABV to make it a perfect summer beer.

imageBart also brews two other different wheat beers (Street Light Wheat & High Water Hefe) a porter (Canal Porter), an English ESB (Suzy’s ESB), a red (Buggytown Red) ale, a Hoppy pale ale (Hopscale Pale Ale), a Kolsch (Lazy Days), a Scottish Ale (Highlander) as well as a nitro-pushed west coast IPA (Nitro Blaster IPA)…and I can tell you everything I’ve tasted has been a very solid brew….so get down to Milton and check out River House Brewpub for yourself.

Thanks

to  Bart Rieppel, John, Joe, Karel and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

So what will we be sampling THIS week? Hint:  This week we’re Rolling in some more locally-brewed beer and an exciting new brewmaster!

WILK Friday Beer Buzz–The Video (10 June 2011 Breaker Brewing 5-Whistle)

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–10 June 2011 (Breaker Brewing Co 5 Whistle Wheat)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7_thumb2I’m a firm believer that if you love what you do, that love comes out in the product.  I’m also a firm believer that if you work hard AND lover what you do, success will follow.  On today’s show we brought you an example of both.

BreakerNewferment_thumb5Chris Miller and Mark Lehman, brewmasters for Breaker Brewing Co not only have a love for brewing great craft beer, but they are two of the hardest working young men I know…and I can personally attest that their love comes out in the beer, and their work ethic has continued leading them to success.

imageToday we sampled their 5-Whistle Wheat.  This is a brand new beer from Mark & Chris and the color, flavor and 4.9% ABV drinkability are wonderful.  See for yourself and be sure to sample for yourself.  This beer is bound to be a summertime favorite.

I was also excited to break the news today about the Breaker Brewing Co  purchase of the former St Josephs Monastery on Northampton St in Wilkes-Barre . It was fun to talk to Mark & Chris about their future plans for the property and I can’t wait to watch it develop.  You can catch up on the story here, here or here…but as always be sure to stay tuned to mybeerbuzz.com and breakerbrewingcompany.com for the latest details…

Thanks

to  Mark, Chris, Nancy, John, Joe, and Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video (3 June 2011) Victory Summer Love

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–3 June 2011 (Victory Brewing Summer Love)

WILKFridayBerbuzz15Back in March we teamed up with Brian Whetstone from Victory Brewing to bring you the NEPA premier of Victory Headwaters Pale Ale…and we even invited you all to come out to Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer to sample it with us.  Later that night we worked with Brian to schedule another great event to premier another great Victory Brewing beer AND let you come out tonight and sample it again….and TODAY is the DAY!

imageToday Brian Whetstone was nice enough to join us in the studio to to launch the new Victory Summer Love golden Ale.  I wrote abut this beer back in April when the label was released and I’ve been excited to try it ever since.

Summer Love is not only a great 5.2% ABV golden ale, but also part of a joint venture between the Philly Tourism bureau and Victory Brewing to promote the “With Love Philadelphia XOXO” campaign.  Summer Love is also a feature beer for this week’s Philly Beer Week.

Summer Love is a lighter easy drinking summer beer with a great hop note up front, and just enough body to make it drinkable and satisfying….and speaking of drinkable….Come on out tonight (June 3rd from 5-7PM) to Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer to sample Victory Summer Love yourself.  I’ll be on hand with Brian Whetstone to hand out samples and talk beer so mark your calendars and come on out!

Thanks

to  Brian (and everyone @ Victory Brewing), John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.
