Friday BeerBuzz – The Teaser (1 Oct 2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 Just when you thought it was safe to assume this week’s Friday BeerBuzz would be just another normal show, we threw in an unexpected curveball to mix it up.  Last week we decided to throw in two curve balls, and I think it worked out great.  First off, we had local hockey sensation Dennis Bonvie join us in the studio to sample the beer with us.  And as if that wasn’t fun enough, Head Brewer Mitch Steele from Stone Brewing in Escondido California joined us on the phone to sample Stone 14 Emperial IPA.  Needless to say the mix worked out really well…a great beer, a great head brewer to talk about his beer and a fun in-studio guest to sample it with us.

So what will we be tasting this week?

Hint: We’re finally bringing in a much-requested beer style and we’ll do something with it that we’ve never done before on the show!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 24 Sept 2010 (Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 Yes I’ll readily admit that my inner beer-geek emerged as we welcomed brewmaster Mitch Steele from Stone Brewing Co to the Friday BeerBuzz.  As Webster will reinforce, Stone Brewery & world bistro gardens is an amazing place; one of my favorite beer destinations, and a place all beer lovers should visit.  Not only does Stone serve some amazing beers there, but the brewing facility and outdoor gardens are incredible. (see photos below).Stone14

It was incredibly nice of Mitch to join us live on the phone from Escondido CA at 5:30AM in the morning their time, and even though Mitch admits he’s an early riser, I’m still very thankful that he took the time.  Stone beers are huge in our market and I think it’s really exciting to have our local listeners get to hear from the man responsible for brewing them.SanDiegoJune2008 209

Stone 14th Anniversary (Emperial IPA) has a great story and of course it’s also a great beer.  For those that have followed along, Stone has been shopping for real estate in the UK to potentially open the first US craft brewing facility in the UK.  While on that journey, Mitch & the guys from Stone spent some time researching the history of the India Pale Ale and came up with Emperial IPA.  This adventure not only spawned a great beer, but stay tuned for a book that Mitch & Steve Wagner are writing about IPA brewing for the Brewers Association.SanDiegoJune2008 213

Emperial IPA is a malty British-styled IPA for sure, but it has way more going for it than that.  To my palate, the IPA also has not only a prominent hoppy character, but also a strong peach backbone.  Now I’ll admit I love a good peach flavor in a beer and maybe I just want to taste Peach in here, but I swear I do.  In any case this is a great beer and one that you should seek out while it is still readily available in NEPA.SanDiegoJune2008 211

I also want to say a big thank you to Dennis Bonvie for joining us on the show and tasting Stone 14 with us.  It was exciting to meet Dennis and I’m excited to see his Beefy King & Blue Chip Gourmet restaurants doing so well in Wilkes-Barre.

A big show for sure and another tasty beer.

Thanks

to Mitch, Dennis,  John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz The Teaser (24 Sept 2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 As some may know last week was a fun, unusual and hectic show.  Mrs. BeerBuzz & I departed on a last minute vacation shortly after the show, in fact we ran straight from the studio to the airport.  This sort of chaos always imparts a different energy into the show, and hopefully it was a good energy.  It was also fun having Mrs. BeerBuzz hang out in the studio to see where the “magic happens” ;)  Troegs Scratch # 29 is a unique beer and one I’m glad I brought on the show.  Yes I’ve heard from those that have said it was better fresh, but I still stand by my assertion that it has improved as the oak flavor has mellowed….you be the judge.

So what will we be tasting this week?

Hint: This week is BIG!!  Tune in and see why…and yes it’s because of our guest!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 17 Sept 2010 (Troegs Scratch # 29)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 Troegs Brewing company started brewing their scratch series many years ago, and without a doubt it has been one of the more successful series of limited-production brewed beers on the east coast.  Chris & John Treogner, along with their brewing staff have managed to incorporate some really interesting ingredients while still using many of their tradition production beer ingredients, and even moving some Scratch beers into future production beers.

Today we sampled Scratch # 29, and oak aged Belgian IPA…and therein lies the controversy I mentioned in the teaser post on Wed.  Scratch # 29 is barrel aged in virgin oak barrels from Keystone Coopers.  This unused oak imparts a really prominent character into the beer and while many beer lovers out there are proclaiming that it should be consumed extremely fresh, to my palate it is getting better with age as the oak mellows.  This is why I chose to bring it on the show now and not back in July when it was first released.

This beer is big in a lot of ways.  Big flavor, big yeasty bite and big carbonation (as you’ll see when you open one).  This beer also uses a proprietary yeast from Westmalle that really changes the character of the beer considerably.

I also want to thank Mayor Justin Taylor for coming on the show with us and helping us sample the Scratch # 29, AND for giving away some tickets to the Pioneer City Oktoberfest in Carbondale on October 2nd.

Another amazing show (even with our secret guest)  and a really interesting and rare beer.

Thanks

to Justin, John, Nancy, Joe, Bosco (and Mrs. BeerBuzz) for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz The Teaser - 17 Sep 2010

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 Last week we welcomed Leo Orlandini & Darel Matthews into the studio to sample Stegmaier Oktoberfest.  This beer always signals the beginning of the fall season for me and it’s slightly sweet malty-character and full-bodied feel always does a good job of kicking off the Oktoberfest beer season too.  The beer was tasty and the guys were really fun guests.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…having guests that are also good friends is always a ton of fun…especially when they bring a great beer that they brewed.  Thanks again guys.

So what will we be tasting this week?

Hint: This one is unique in over 28 ways and a local rare beer that will cause some controversy.  We ALSO will have a very special guest in the studio!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 10 Sept 2010 (Stegmaier Oktoberfest)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3

There’s a different energy in the studio when we have guests, and when we welcome two guests that I consider friends, it’s even more fun.  Today we welcomed Leo Orlandini and Darel Matthews from Lion Brewery to taste their Stegmaier Oktoberfest.  Now I know you may be thinking we’re pushing the season, but keep in mind the real Oktoberfest celebration in Munich Germany actually starts on Sept 18th and ends by Oct 3rd…so we’re right on.

Oktoberfest as we know it started as a wedding celebration in 1810.  Prince Ludwig of Bavaria wanted his subjects to share in his wedding celebration so he organized a horse race and a pretty major party attended by over 40,000 guests.  Today the 16-day celebration draws close to 7 million people, and perhaps even more this year as they celebrate the 200 year anniversary.  It’s also fun to note that each year 5.5 million litres of beer are consumed in Munich and the tents can hold close to 100,000 people.

FridayBeerbuzz10Sep2010 Lion Brewery produces a seasonal Oktoberfest beer every year in support of the Oktoberfest tradition.  It’s a really interesting and tasty fall beer and a seasonal beer I look forward to every year.  It’s fun to hear the brewing details of this beer from the guys that brew it, and really fun to taste Oktoberfest with Leo & Darel as well.

It was also interesting to hear the capacity that Lion Brewery has to brew beers.  We’re all too used to talking to brewers with 100-gallon capacities so it’s an interesting contrast to compare that to Lion’s 45,000-gallon lagering tanks (see photo).  Fortunately this makes Lion products available to more and more beer lovers.

I really enjoyed having two friends on as guests…and of course the Oktoberfest was yummy..

Thanks

to Leo, Darel, John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz The Teaser - 10 Sep 2010

WILKFridayBeerbuzz1 With Chuck Yarmey from the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers in the studio and the chaos that is BEER CAM also present, last Friday’s show was a fun one.  I think home brewing has always been on the horizon for me and I’ve just never made the move to actually do it.  I do plan to attend the meeting on 9/13 (7PM) at Sabatinis to hang out with the guys and look a little closer at home brewing.  It’s important to remember that you don’t have to home brew to attend the meetings, and you don’t have to buy all of the gear to participate in home brewing.  There are many local men and women that are actively home brewing that are even willing to pass on their experiences and let you share in the brewing experience.  Of course you can just come to the meeting and talk about beer if you’d like…that’s always encouraged.  Thanks again to Chuck for coming on the Friday BeerBuzz.

So what will we be tasting this week?

Hint: This week the seasons have changed and our guests will confirm that.

BEER CAM Home Alone (version 1.2)

We not only modified BEER CAM again (version 1.2), but we made the mistake of leaving him (or her) Home Alone last night...

Friday BeerBuzz - Beer Cam 3 Sept 2010

Here's our second installment of the Friday Beerbuzz BEER CAM. This week we feature Beer Cam version 1.1 and we shot a considerably longer video....which is good news for all the BEER CAM fans. Beer Cam loved the show today and he really enjoyed pouring the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers IPA & Baltic Porter. Stay tuned for future appearances of the Friday BeerBuzz BEER CAM!

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 3 Sept 2010 (Wyoming Valley Home Brewers IPA & Baltic Porter)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 Today we welcomed a unique guest to the Friday BeerBuzz.  We normally welcome brew masters who make a living brewing beer for some of our local (and not so local) breweries.  But keep in mind for every brewer that is brewing professionally, there are hundreds of home brewers brewing for the simple love of brewing beer.

Our guest today was Chuck Yarmey, founder of the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers.  Chuck and President Joe Miller are celebrating their 15th year as a club so we’d encourage you to stop down to Sabatini’s on Sept 13th at 7PM and attend their monthly meeting. (I know I’ll be there).  If you ever had any interest in home brewing yourself, participating in a home brewing session with one of the members OR simply hanging out and talking beer with a bunch of guys that love beer, this club is for you.

wyoming valley homebrewers

Now I know what you’re saying….home brewed beers are just “OK” beers and not so great…well you’d be wrong.  Not only did we taste two fantastic brews today, but John & I also judged the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers competition back in June and the beers were really good.  I should also note that a few years back, the guys had a Bourbon Porter that was by far one of the best beers at the Split Rock Great American Beer Festival, even compared to professional brews.  These home brews are good!

Today we tasted an IPA and a Baltic Porter, and congratulations to the brewers of these beers, because we really enjoyed them.  I think we also broke new ground here by bringing the first homebrewing beers on the radio to sample.  I can also tell you Beer Cam really enjoyed riding shotgun on the IPA bottle as well while we tasted.

Another amazing show if I do say so myself…and two more tasty beers.

Thanks

to Chuck, John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz – The Teaser (9/3/2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 I can’t believe the end of summer has arrived.  Yes I love the three day weekend but I can’t tell you how much I’d rather it be the Memorial Day weekend and not Labor Day…but again I digress.

Last week’s show we premiered the Beer Cam and tasted Weeping Radish Black Radish.  The beer was yummy and who know the Beer Cam would become such an instant celebrity.  People love the Beer Cam and rest assured he (or she) will become a regular guest and co-host of the show.  I can’t guarantee such a celebrity will be available for every show, but we’ll do our best.

So what will we be tasting this week?

Hint: This week we’ll be tasting more than one beer I guarantee YOU’ve never tried.  This will be a unique show with a unique guest.
