Friday BeerBuzz The Teaser–1 June 2012

WILKFridayBeerbuzz1We had a great time last week.  Perhaps it was reminiscing about my vacation weekends skiing Killington with my friends and drinking Long Trail beer, or perhaps it was just because we were lucky enough to sample not one but two great Long Trail beers…in any case we really enjoyed sampling Belgian White & Brewmaster Series DIPA with Head Brewer Dave Hartmann and I look forward to what he has coming next (stay tuned for a Brewmaster pumpkin beer this fall.)

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: This weeks Brewmaster has joined us before, but now he’s at a NEW Brewery & not whining about it.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

Friday BeerBuzz - 25 May 2012 Long Trail Belgian White & Brewmaster Series DIPA w/Dave Hartmann

WILK Friday BeerBuzz 25 May 2012–Long Trail Belgian White & Brewmaster Series Double IPA

WILKFridayBerbuzz11It’s always exciting to welcome a new brewery on to the WILK Friday BeerBuzz.  We’ve had lots of guests and featured a lot of breweries, but it’s always really exciting to bring a well known brewery on to the show and show off some of their great beers.

Today we were lucky enough to get Long Trail Brewery to join us on the show.  While many people may be familiar with this great craft brewery, for some they are a brewery yet to be discovered.

Long Trail comes to us from Bridgewater Corners, VT and while many people know them for their famous Long Trail Pale Ale, they are also know for their brewing process and more importantly how environmentally friendly they are.  Winner of the Vermont Governors Environmental Excellence Award, Long Trail is one of the most “environmentally conscious” and efficient breweries we’ve featured.  From their conservation of ingredients & resources, to their re-use of brewing by-products, Long Trail is one of the best.  Spent Mash is used to feed cows, heat used during brewing is recovered & reused, water usage is 1/3 that or a normal brewery and Long Trail is twilkhe largest participant in Vermont’s Cow Power renewable energy Program.

But don’t think this is just about environmental friendliness…Long Trail brews some great beers.  We were excited to sample Long Trail’s Spring Seasonal Belgian White.  This is a perfect beer for Spring & Summer and a classic Belgian Witbier that is both sessionable, and also loaded with citrus & spicy flavors (including my favorite hop variety…Nugget.)

As if that wasn't enough, we also sampled the latest release from the Long Trail Brewmaster Series Double IPA..AND we sampled them BOTH with Head Brewer Dave Hartmann.  Dave clearly knows his stuff when it comes to brewing, and these beers are just two tasty examples of his work.  The Double IPAs was a big switch from our first beer of the day and this brew is big in flavor, big in IBU (86), big in body and even big in ABV (8.6%).  This is the fourth beer in the Long Trail Brewmaster Series (following Coffee Stout, Imperial Porter & Centennial Red) and the first one I’ve been able to try.  Be sure to try these two beers for yourself TONIGHT @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer!

Thanks

to Dave Hartmann from Long Trail, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–25 May 2012 The Teaser

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3We had a fantastic time sampling Brooklyn Brewery Sorachi Ace w/Garrett Oliver last week.  Garrett was not only a lot of fun to talk too, but really knows his beer/food pairings.  The Sorachi Ace Saison / Goat Cheese mix was amazing and I look forward to having Garrett back sometime in the future.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: Another guest joins us, this time from one of my favorite skiing states.  We’ll also be sampling two NEW beers!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

Friday BeerBuzz 18 May 2012 - Brooklyn Sorachi Ace w/Garrett Oliver

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–18 May 2012 Brooklyn w/Garrett Oliver

WILKFridayBerbuzz11Every so often my production & hosting duties on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz offer me what I call a “holy cow” moment….and today was one of those moments.  For me to sit in the studio and sample a Brooklyn Brewery Beer while speaking to the one and only Garrett Oliver was exciting and somewhat surreal experience.

Brooklyn Brewery remains one of the earliest and most influential craft breweries in the northeast.  In my early craft-beer-years, I was still pretty new to great beer and I was excited to find so many coming out of one brewery in nearby Brooklyn, NY.  I’ve also been a huge fan of the Brewmaster’s Table, a book Garrett Oliver wrote in 2003 that not only teaches you about tasting craft beer but also the “pleasures” of pairing it with great food.” Garrett’s writings were some of the first experiences I’ve had with pairing beer & food, and for me, the Brewmaster’s Table is the absolute beer/food bible.

It was a lot of fun talking to Garrett about his Brewmaster’s Table book, but also his latest The Oxford Companion to Beer.  This is the first and still ONLY encyclopedia devoted to craft beer, and more importantly the history & development of craft beer as well as brewing.  These are both must-read books for anyone new or even experienced with craft beer.image

It was also exciting to talk to Garrett about the expansion and exciting news coming out of Brooklyn Brewery.  Their move to canning beer and the growth of their facilities speaks well for the future of Brooklyn Brewery and is certainly exciting for beer lovers.

Sampling Sorachi Ace with Garrett was quite an honor.  I still consider myself new to food and beer pairing so it was a lot of fun working with a great Brooklyn beer and then with Garrett’s guidance, pairing it with food.  Garrett recommended the fresh goat cheese we sampled today, and the pairing was perfect.  For me personally it was the lemongrass flavor of the Sorachi Ace hop that made the pairing perfect.  The beer was dry and clean and the flavors complimented the goat cheese really well.  If you remember back on our Christmas Show we paired Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout with several dishes based on mascarpone cheese, and as amazing as that was, it was even more amazing to get another try at beer/food pairing with Garrett.

Thank you to Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn Brewery

, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz – The Teaser 18 May 2012

WILKFridayBerbuzz11We’ve had an amazing run of shows lately, not only to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary of the WILK Friday BeerBuzz, but also to welcome tow friends from a new and local Brewery.  It was a lot of fun welcoming Fred Maier & Jaime Jurado into the studio last week and even more fun to be among the first to sample the first beers coming out of Susquehanna Brewing Co.  We were honored to do so, and I thank Fred & Jaime for the opportunity.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: READ CAREFULLY…This week’s guest is perhaps one of the BIGGEST  guests we’ve had on the show so far.  Do NOT Miss this show!

Friday BeerBuzz 11 May 2012 Susquehanna Brewing Co 6th Generation Stock Ale & Goldencold Lager w/Jaime Jurado & Fred Maier

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–11 May 2012 Susquehanna Brewing Co w/Jaime Jurado & Fred Maier

WILKFridayBerbuzz7Today's guests on the Friday BeerBuzz carry with them some of the most famous and historical brewing traditions in the Wyoming Valley and also some of the most state-of-the-art brewing techniques available today….and I am very excited to not only see the two come together, but to see them come together in our own back yard. Today we were very excited to welcome Fred Maier & Jaime Jurado from the brand new Susquehanna Brewing Co (SBC) in Pittston.  We brought you news of SBC coming to Pittston, PA back in Feb 2011, and we’ve been following along ever since.  I watched the guys build out their new 50bbl BrauKon system and we on the Friday BeerBuzz were tremendously honored to be among the first to get to taste their beer.
image
Susquehanna Brewing Co is located at the former United Beverage building on S Main St in Pittston, but their brewing history is rich.  Fred Maier’s family were among the owners of our area’s most historic and prominent brewery, the Stegmaier Brewery.  Fred’s family also owned the original Susquehanna Brewing Co in Nanticoke, PA…so his brewing roots run deep.

Jaime Jurado joined SBC in January and the brewing background and history he brings will be a driving force for SBC in the future.  Jaime actually worked at the Lion Brewery among other breweries, but is most well know for his recent position at Gambrinus (Shiner, Trumer & Bridgeport Brewing).  Stay tuned for great things from Jaime.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised to sample SBC 6th Generation Stock Ale today. Given everything I know about SBC and seeing the amount of hops loaded into SBC’s “Hopjack”, I was expecting it to be a great beer and I definitely wasn't disappointed. 6th Generation Stock Ale not only celebrates the Maier family’s long-time tradition of brewing, but it also welcomes a new generation of beer lovers with a hoppy & drinkable ale. We were also honored to sample SBC’s Goldencold Lager. This is a lighter-bodied easy-drinking brew that I think will also do really well. I particularly liked that two of the three initial offerings from SBC include both a traditional Ale and Lager. I think this bodes well for local craft beer lovers

and I’m really excited to see what will come next (i.e. Pils Noir coming soon!)

.

Stay tuned with me as Susquehanna Brewing Co beers find their way into your local pubs, and stay tuned for more from Fred, Jaime & everyone at SBC in the future.

This was a wonderful way to celebrate the first beers to be brewed at Susquehanna Brewing Co…and my Thank you to Fred Maier & Jaime Jurado from Susquehanna Brewing Co

, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser–11 May 2012

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Last week we had a great time welcoming Bobby Clark from Weyerbacher Brewing  into the studio to help us celebrate the 2nd year anniversary of the WILK Friday BeerBuzz.  Thank you to Bobby, everyone at Weyerbacher, everyone @ Krugel’s and especially to everyone who came out to our party.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint:

This week we’ll be celebrating the first brews from a new brewery…did I say new?…actually I meant historical!

Friday BeerBuzz - 4 May 2012 Weyerbacher Belgian Sour Black w/Bobby Clark

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–4 May 2012 Weyerbacher Sour Black w/Bobby Clark

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Back in May of 2010 we quietly launched our very first every WILK Friday BeerBuzz show.  I remember my emotions for that show being somewhere between excitement and complete fear.  Jump ahead 2 years later, and I can’t believe we’re celebrating our 2nd Year Anniversary.

Last year for our 1-year anniversary, we invited Chris Wilson from Weyerbacher Brewing up to celebrate our anniversary with us.  Chris brought up some Weyerbacher 16 and our pal Theresa Duffy brought even more great Weyerbacher beer to celebrate at our Krugel’s tasting party.  Since everyone had such a great time, we thought why not make it a tradition, and do it all again w/Weyerbacher….and of course there’s a BIG PARTY TONIGHT!

With Chris out in San Diego for the Craft Brewers Conference, we were lucky enough to get Bobby Clark to join us and bring up a really special beer.  This beer is so new, it doesn’t even have a name so we’re simply calling it Weyerbacher Sour Black.  This new brew is a black Belgian-style sour that’s been aging for close to a year in the former Rapture Pinot Noir barrels and the flavor is amazing.  Sour Black has a rich color and a bold sour flavor.  You can really taste the influence the wine barrels had on it with a vinous background, a little oak and a wonderful sour flavor.  I’ll be excited to see this one released and can’t wait to hear the name.

It was also cool to talk to Bobby about the development & use of the new Weyerbacher logo & the brewery expansion.  (We brought you a peek at the new logo back in Feb)

My thanks to Bobby Clark for making the ride up to be on our show AND to stay for tonight’s special Weyerbacher tasting event

Remember to come out tonight (May 4th) from 5-7PM @ Krugel’s Georgetown Deli, next to the Big Cow on Rt 309 in Wilkes-Barre Twp. to celebrate the 2-Year Anniversary of the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK. We’ll have Bobby Clark from Weyerbacher on hand with a sampling of their great brews and the entire WILK Friday BeerBuzz crew will be there to talk beer. This event is open to all (must be 21 or older to sample beer) so be sure to bring a friend and stop by!

Thanks

to Bobby Clark from Weyerbacher, Nancy, John, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.
