WILK Friday BeerBuzz–27 Jan 2012 Kona Koko Brown Ale w/Mattson Davis

WILKFridayBerbuzz15Craft beer people are an amazing bunch.  The passion we all share for great beer, and the craft beer camaraderie that I find as I meet brewery, CEO’s, master brewers and Presidents shines through in what they do…but today we reached a new craft-beer-passion height.

It’s clear to me when I spoke with our guest today that he is successful for a reason.  Mattson Davis is energetic, but I give him even more credit that this energy and passion for craft beer even managed to shine through at 3AM!  Yes that’s right…Mattson Davis was nice enough to join us LIVE from Hawaii at 3:30AM their time.

Just a few weeks ago, Kona sent out a press release announcing they would soon be distributing their beer in PA beginning Jan 17th, so the timing was perfect to talk to Mattson.  Kona will be bringing us Longboard Island Lager, Fire Rock Pale Ale and even the first beer from their Aloha Series, Koko Brown.  Also look for the new canned version of Longboard Island Lager, a package that I think is perfect for this beer.

Mattson was also nice enough to join us in sampling Kona Aloha Series Koko Brown.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to try any of the Kona brews in the past, you’re in for a treat.  Koko Brown is an easy drinking, nut brown ale made with coconut.  As the label says it is the first beer in their Aloha Series of seasonal ales and I think this will be a very successful beer in PA….especially with an easy-drinking 5.5% ABV.  This is a great beer and I suspect it will gain a strong following in our area.  The caramel & toffee flavors, have a gentle backbone of nutty aroma and the wonderful balance of the coconut flavors, especially in the first few tastes.

We were also very excited to sample Kona’s flagship Longboard Island Lager. This crisp, clean easy drinking lager is perfect for anytime, but the new can packaging coming soon will also make it a great summer beer.

Be sure to watch for Kona Brewing beers as they hit Northeastern PA and try them for yourself.

Thank you to Mattson Davis from Kona Brewery

, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

WILKFridayBerbuzz15Last week we welcomes Jamie Bartholomaus from Foothills Brewing to sample Sexual Chocolate.  This is a fantastic beer, and I now understand why many people drive down to Winston-Salem, NC for the bottle release.  If you’re thinking about doing that GO NOW.  The bottle release is this Saturday 1/27….it will be well worth the ride.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint: This week we have another brewery President joining us to sample his beer….the beer is NEW to PA and he’s our all time earliest guest!

Friday BeerBuzz–The Video 20 Jan 2012 Foothills Sexual Chocolate w/Jamie Bartholomaus

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–20 Jan 2012

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3We welcome all sorts of guests onto the Friday BeerBuzz…and all have one thing in common…a passion for craft beer…and whether they are CEO’s or master brewers, they all share that passion with our listeners.  Whether it is a large brewery or a small brewery, the passion is always the same….and we love tapping into it.

Today we talked to Jamie Bartholomaus, President & Brewmaster for Foothills Brewing Co in Winston-Salem, NC.  Foothills Brewing is a relatively small brewery that brews 17 different seasonal and year-round beers, BUT only bottles two beers.  Of the two beers Jamie and the crew bottle, one generates more excitement when the bottles are released…and while Foothills Brewing beers are not distributed very far outside the greater Winston-Salem area, their impact is felt all the way into Northeastern PA.

We started talking to Jamie back in December, and he was nice enough to join us on the Friday BeerBuzz during the most hectic month of the year at Foothills.  Every year, Jamie releases a special Imperial Stout that people travel from all over the US to get their hands on.  That beer is Sexual Chocolate and the release date is 1/27…NEXT Friday.

This beer is bog in a lot of way.  Big in ABV, big in body, big in flavor and big in excitement.  One of the most traded and sought after beers, Sexual Chocolate is a beer that every beer lover covets, every craft beer enthusiast chases and for those lucky enough to sample it…it’s a brew you’ll never forget.

It was a blast talking to Jamie and sampling with him today, and I can only hope that Jamie’s appearance is just the beginning of Foothills transition into wider distribution, and wider recognition.  A special thank you to Jamie for spending the time with us today during the busiest week of the year for Foothills.  We appreciate the company and we especially appreciate the opportunity to sample Foothills Sexual Chocolate with you.

Thanks

to Jamie Bartholomaus from Foothills Brewing, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz 13 Jan 2012–Turkey Hill Brewing Winter Saison w/Jim Hahn & Oran Tansey

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–13 Jan 2011 Turkey Hill Brewing w/Jim Hahn & Oran Tansey

WILKFridayBerbuzz15It should be no mystery on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz that we love featuring our local brewers and breweries.  There is nothing quite like having the guys brewing the beer join you so sample some of their great beer, and it’s even better when that brewery is nearby.

We brought you the news of Turkey Hill Brewing Co back in Feb 2011, so today we were very excited to welcome Jim Hahn & Oran Tansey into the studio.  Jim and I have been talking for over a year as Turkey Hill Brewing was being built, and I’m very happy to see all of the hard work that went into Turkey Hill pay off.

Last week during the holidays we took a trip down to visit Turkey Hill Brewing for ourselves.  First off I should mention that Turkey Hill Brewing is EASY to get to.  The pub is literally just off the Rt 80 exit in Bloomsburg and right on Rt 487 for those familiar with the University of Bloomsburg.  Next I should mention how simply incredible the new building is.  Housing the bar, brewery & restaurant, (and even outdoor space), the new barn-style structure looks amazing and it’s a wonderful experience just sitting at the bar enjoying a pint.

On our visit, we sampled 10 different beers from an easy drinking Barn Dance Blonde Ale, to the Winter Saison and Fort Wheeler Stronghold Ale…so it was exciting to have Jim & Oran join us to sample some Turkey Hill beers.  I particularly enjoyed the Journeyman IPA, & California Red Head at the pub and I really enjoyed the Winter Saison, Belgian Pale Ale and Fort Wheeler Stronghold Ale today.

Be sure to experience Turkey Hill Brewing and their wide selection of craft beer for yourself.  The food is fantastic, the building is amazing and of course the beers are great.  Also check out Turkey Hill’s Facebook Page & Website.

Thanks

to Jim Hahn & Oran Tansey from Turkey Hill Brewing Co, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 13 Jan 2012

WILKFridayBerbuzz14It’s always a blast talking to someone who shares our passion for craft beer on the Friday BeerBuzz…so we were thrilled to have Mark Hellendrung, CEO of Narragansett Beer join us to sample a beer.  Mark is bringing back the historical Narragansett Brewery and I’ll be excited to follow along as they progress…and it was even better to get our hands on some of Narragansett’s Bock to sample and talk beer with Mark.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: We’ll have guests inn the studio with us and we’ll be sampling some of their great local beer from just over the hill !

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz - 6 Jan 2012–Narragansett Bock with Mark Hellendrung

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Welcome to 2012 and welcome to our first Friday BeerBuzz of the new year.  Last year I vowed to not only feature some amazing rare & big beers, but it was my 2011 New Years resolution to bring you more and more approachable beers.  We’ve spent the year bringing you easy drinking, flavorful beers that are easy to find and affordable to buy, so why not start out 2012 with the same.

Today we featured Narragansett Bock Lager.  This spring seasonal brew from Narragansett comes in a non-traditional 16oz can, but don’t let that distract you from a great bock-style lager. Narragansett Bock is rich and malty and even at 6.5% ABV, it’s easy drinking and full of flavor.  The guys at Narragansett start with a traditional Helles lager and then brew it to Bock strength (a recipe created in the 1930’s), so this one is a classic.  In case you had any doubts, Narragansett Bock recently won a Silver Medal in the World Beer Championship, so be sure to check it out for yourself

NarrangansettBock

Today we were lucky enough to get CEO and Narragansett Beer evangelist Mark Hellendrung to join us on the show.  Mark has played a major role in reviving the original 1800’s Narragansett brewery, and I think he’s doing the original founders proud.  This is no small task, and I think this speaks well for all regional breweries from the past.  You can honor the traditions & historical brews of an older brewery and still make it successful in today’s craft beer market….so be sure to follow along & support Mark & everyone @ Narragansett as they raise funds to build a new brewery and start new brewing traditions of their own.

For those already asking, YES Narragansett Beers WILL be available in NEPA, in fact they are rolling into our market as we speak…so be sure to taste Narragansett Bock for yourself.

Thanks

to Mark Hellendrung from Narragansett Beer, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 6 Jan 2012

WILKFridayBerbuzz8We celebrated the end of 2011 and the coming of 2012 last Friday with Philadelphia Brewing Company’s  Brewer in Chief John Rehm.  John was nice enough to join us to sample Pennsylvania Pale Ale and we really enjoyed this hoppy sessionable pale ale coming from our very own city of brotherly love.  Check this one out for yourself.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: We’re reaching out this week to a new brewery in a little state and we’ll be sampling their seasonal with their CEO!
