WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 27 Aug 2010 (Weeping Radish Black Radish)
I learned long ago that my favorite part of enjoying beer, is sharing it with others…especially if it’s a beer they’ve never tried. With today’s beer I had a double treat. Not only did I get to enjoy a beer that is near and dear to my heart, but also a beer that most local beer lovers have never tried…yet!
Many moons ago I sat at the small bar on Manteo Island in North Carolina enjoying a liter of beer. The year was 1996, the biergarten was Weeping Radish and the beer was Black Radish. This was one of my very early craft beer memories, and every time I enjoy a Weeping Radish Black Radish, I remember that warm summer day.
We collected quite a few bottles that year and I remember how cool I thought the bottle caps were (who wouldn’t love a Radish in Lederhosen) and how great all of the Weeping Radish beers tasted. Back in NEPA we managed to find Black Radish and Weizen, but sadly most of the Weeping Radish beers faded from our market.
Black Radish is a wonderful dark lager and one I’d recommend trying. Now it’s of course going to be a little tricky to find, but for those of us who regularly travel to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, check in any Harris Teeter or Food Lion and you’ll find it. Or better yet, stop into the Weeping Radish farm & brewery in Jarvisburg and buy it direct. While you’re there be sure to check out their Weizen, Fest and OBX beers.
As always it was another fun show and another tasty beer today.
Thanks
to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Teaser (8/27/2010)
It was odd to say somewhat of a farewell to summer last week, with our Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat Friday Beerbuzz. It always seems like May through Aug fly and Nov through Feb drag, but I digress. I really enjoyed sharing Sunset Wheat with everyone on the show because I truly think this is a gateway beer that will help create craft beer lovers. Now I know all of the hard-core beer lovers out there may not consider it much of a beer, and that’s fine….but this is a beer I enjoy, and even though it may not be a Belgian Saison, it’s still an enjoyable beer. Also keep in mind that if a beer like Sunset Wheat helps create another local craft beer lover, then we as craft beer lovers are likely to see more and more great beers heading to NEPA. More demand = more good beers, and not just from Leinies.
So what will we be tasting this week?
Hint: This week’s beer was one of my first craft beers, however it makes me cry to think we hardly ever see it in NEPA these days.
Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday Beerbuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 20 Aug 2010 (Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat)
It’s funny when you’re considered a “beer guy”, “beer geek” or even “beer expert.” People have all sorts of pre-conceived notions and sadly many of these notions assume some level of beer snobbery. Thankfully that’s not the case. To help reinforce that point I enter today’s beer as “Exhibit # 1.” I chose a beer for today’s show that is not only decidedly mainstream, but also a beer from a brewery owned by one of the big macro breweries, SAB-Miller. Now granted Leinie’s is brewed independently, but it’s still mainstream. And here’s my admission of the day. I chose this beer because I like it. So as I’ve always said…love what you drink and drink what you love…regardless of what anyone else may think about it.
We had fun with this summer beer today on the show and it’s always fun just saying “Leinenkugel’s.” Yes some people think it tastes like fruity pebbles mixed with beer, but I think this is a beer worth trying….and you may be surprised to find you like it too. Get yourself a frosty cold mug and a bottle of Leinie’s Sunset Wheat and let me know what you think.
Another fun show and tasty beer today.
I want to say t
hank you to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Teaser (8/18/2010)
Last week was perhaps one of my favorite shows of all time. With such fun guests and such a great beer in Black Diamond dark IPA, how can you go wrong…and of course it doesn’t hurt if you’re hitting the road for vacation right after the show too. Sice the beaches and beers are calling my name as I type this…I’ll keep the teaser short…
This week we have another surprise.
Hint: The surprise in this weeks beer is that I’d choose it AND that I really like it.

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 13 Aug 2010 (Breaker Brewing Co Black Diamond)
I said it on the show and I’ll say it again. What a fun show today! Yes I’ll admit I’m leaving on vacation in a scant few hours so I’m well on my way to “happy-ville” to begin with BUT, that’s not all. Today we welcomed not only two of our local brewers to the studio, but two guys I consider good friends…and I can’t tell you how much fun it is to sample a great beer with a studio full of friends.
Today we sampled the new Breaker Brewing Co Black Diamond dark rye IPA, and we really enjoyed it. For those that have been on a desert island for the last two years, Breaker Brewing Co is a small garage-based brewery in Plains with brewers Mark Lehman and Chris Miller. The guys brew some great beers and have been doing real well locally with their beers.
Black Diamond is a really interesting beer and one I really enjoyed. I was lucky enough to sample some a few weeks ago so I was really excited to have it on the show. I’m also looking forward to trying it on nitro at Purv’s in the future.
Be sure to stop in to the Raising the Roof event tonight at the new Intermodal center with Breaker Brewing Co, and Mark your calendars for the Split Rock Beer Festival (Nov 20 & 21) to enjoy some more Breaker Brewing Co beers.
What a fun show! T
hank you to Chris, Mark, John, Nancy (I swear we tried to save you some), & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Last week we welcomed our long distance guest
This week we will surprise everyone with twice the fun.
Hint: This beer will travel the least amount of miles to our studio of any beer we’ve sampled!

WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 6 Aug 2010 (Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster)
I mentioned in the teaser this week we had another first on the show. Well it may not have been completely obvious, but this was the first time we welcomed a guest on the phone. Spike was calling in from Athens GA, which is of course easy to handle on a talk radio station, but what you didn’t notice (HOPEFULLY) is that our in-studio camera isn’t wired into the audio setup. In the studio itself it’s actually very quiet except for the people in the room talking. All other audio such as music, commercials AND phone callers, are in our headphones only. This made getting the phone calls onto the video a little tricky. Hopefully no one noticed.
Well enough technical-stuff….on to the beer. Today we welcomed Brian “Spike” Buckowski founder and brewmaster for Terrapin Beer Co on to the show. As you heard for yourself, Spike is a funny and interesting guy, so it’s no surprise he brews fun & interesting beers. Today we sampled Spike’s Big Hoppy Monster. If you haven’t tried his one get out there and try it. This Imperial Red Ale packs a punch at 8.75% ABV and a hoppy punch at 73 IBU…and if you held on later into the show break after the Friday Beerbuzz show, I think it was obvious that everyone loved the Big Hoppy Monster.
It was a ton of fun having our long distance guest on the show with us from Athen’s GA today.
I want to say t
hank you to Spike, John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday Beerbuzz – The Teaser 8/6/2010
Last week we welcomed yet another guest into the studio to sample the upcoming beers from Ben Schonfeld @ Benny Brewing Co. Ben was nice enough to bring in his Wit and Hopenstein and we really enjoyed them both. We also have really enjoyed having guests in the studio and Ben was no exception.
This week we have yet ANOTHER surprise.
Hint: This is another first on the Friday Beerbuzz and the turtles will love this show.
