WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video (29 Apr 2011) Fullers London Pride

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–29 Apr 2011 (Fullers London Pride)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8I’ll readily admit up front that it was a lot of fun poking a little fun at the royal wedding and British accents…but more importantly I’ll admit I have VERY fond memories of drinking today’s beer in London last year, and I am a huge fan of Fullers.

Fuller's London PrideIn honor of the “royal wedding” I decided today to choose a brewery that is London’s only remaining traditional family brewery; Fullers.  Fuller, Smith and Turner has been operating a brewery on Chiswick Lane in London since 1845.  It’s also interesting to note that there has been brewing going on at that location under various names for over 350 years!

File0499I chose Fullers London Pride for two reasons.  First, it is a beer that I enjoyed many a pint of while visiting London last summer (see the close up photo left taken at the Leinster Arms on Hyde Park by ME!).  Cask London Pride is very popular in the 367 Fullers pubs and for good reason.  Second, this is Fuller’s most popular brew worldwide and it’s widely know as Britain's leading “premium” ale.  Combine this with it’s easy-drinking character and the fact that it’s readily available in the US & NEPA and you have a winner.

London Pride is well know for it’s balance and drinkability and to me this is why it’s such a great brew.  The malt and fruity flavors are well balanced by the Challenger and Target hops, and the 4.7% ABV make it a great session beer as well.  Be sure to try this one for yourself and see if you agree.

Thanks

to  Prince William, Princess Kate, Nancy, John, Joe, Bosco and all of “me mates”  for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 29 Apr 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz8Last week we had a great time sampling Ballast Point Big Eye IPA.  It’s a surprisingly underrated IPA and one I’m sure I’ll be trying again.  It’s not often that you discover a great beer like this, but given that it is somewhat hidden in the shadow of Ballast Point’s more popular Sculpin IPA, it’s no surprise.  Check this one out for yourself and see what I mean…better yet…check out both.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This beer will have you queuing up to say I DO want another.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–22 Apr 2011 (Ballast Point Big Eye IPA)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Sometimes a really enjoyable beer just sneaks up on you.  Sometimes a little brother is overshadowed by his big brother, but still no less amazing.  Today we sampled the little brother beer on the Friday BeerBuzz and it definitely snuck up on us in a good way.  Now we’re all aware of Ballast Point Sculpin…and we’re all aware it’s a great brew.  But how many of you have stopped to sample Ballast Point’s Big Eye IPA?…well you should.

Sculpin IPA

Big Eye IPA comes to us out of San Diego, CA from brewmaster Yussef Cherney.  Even more interesting is that the origins of Big Eye go back to a home brew that Yussef did in the 90’s that became a regular on his home tap system and ultimately became the basis for the recipe he uses today.  Big Eye is an easy-drinking 7% ABV and 80 IBU brew that uses predominantly Centennial hops for bittering, finishing and dry-hopping….and Centennial is big in the nose and big on your tongue.

I also really enjoy the fact that not only did Ballast Point start out as a home brew supply shop in 1992, but that they also have a great background in yeast culturing and do a lot of work in distilled spirits as well….all things near and dear to my beer-loving-heart.

Be sure to get out and try Ballast Point Big Eye IPA.

Thanks

to  Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (22 Apr 2011)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Thanks again to Head Brewer Brett Kintzer from Stoudt’s for joining us to sample Fat Dog Imperial Oatmeal Stout last week.  It was a great beer and Brett was a really fun guest.

As I think about what fun we had on last week’s show, I can’t help but realize how we are FLYING through April and through spring 2011.  We’re a week from May and you know what that means….Summer Beers!  I’m a big fan of easy drinking summer beers, and some not so traditional summer beers, so stay tuned for some summer stuff as we get closer to warm weather.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This is not only a great summer beer but also comes from a summer-year-round city.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–15 Apr 2011 (Stoudt’s Fat Dog w/ Head Brewer Brett Kintzer)

WILKFridayBerbuzz15

I always enjoy sampling a great beer, but it’s even better to sample a really classic beer with the head brewer himself.  Today we sampled the perfect breakfast beer, Stoudt’s Fat Dog Imperial Oatmeal Stout with head brewer Brett Kintzer.

stoudt's fat dogFat Dog is one of Stoudt’s Big Beer series of brews and this 9% ABV brew did not disappoint.  I call I a breakfast beer ONLY because it is an “oatmeal” stout….from there Brett and the guys hop it up to become a pretty serious and really flavorful Imperial Oatmeal Stout.  This 55IBU stout will sneak up on you with it’s great chocolate and malty backbone, and for a 9% Imperial, you’ll find it to be really drinkable.

StoudtsNeonIt was fun talking to Brett and hearing more about the Brotherly Sudds beer being brewed TODAY @ Stoudt’s.  This beer will be the official beer of Philly Beer Week in June and it features some old-school Schmidt’s Brewery yeast so it should be really interesting to try.  It was also interesting to hear about the Brewery Battle of the Bands event to be held @ Stoudt’s on April 20th.  This is a great fund raiser and a lot of fun so be sure to check it out.

Thanks

to  Brett, Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (15 Apr 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz15

Last week we welcomed Larry Degreen into the Friday BeerBuzz studio.  Larry is the founder and brewmaster for the upstart nano-brewery Purple healer Brewing in Bloomsburg.  Larry brought up a few of his beer to sample and also gave everyone a preview of the brews he’d be pouring at the Taming of the Brew event.  We’re excited to follow along with Larry, so stay tuned.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  This is a perfect breakfast beer and it’s named after something that many people have under foot in their house.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–8 Apr 2011 (Purple Healer Brewing Co)

WILKFridayBerbuzz14Many craft beer lovers dream about not only brewing their own beer, but they also dream about opening their very own brewery.  Today we were joined by Larry Degreen and Larry is living that dream.  Larry is the founder and brewmaster for Purple Healer Brewing Co in Bloomsburg, PA.  Purple Healer Brewing Co LLC is a nano-brewery “in progress” so it will be fun to follow along as Larry gets up to speed.

imageToday Larry was nice enough to bring up a few of his brews for us to try and we really enjoyed trying them all.  There’s something special about sampling a beer with the man or woman that brewed that beer, and you get a really special insight into not only the beer but the brewing process.

….and we really enjoyed all of the beers, but especially the Ripinator Doppelbock.

Larry will also be pouring Purple Healer Brewing beers at this weekends (April 9th) Taming of the Brew event in Bloomsburg.  Taming of the brew is a yearly beer & food event that benefits the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble.  Taming of the Brew attracts some great breweries and restaurants and the event sells out the day ticket sales open just about every year, so if you don’t have a ticket already, start planning for next year.

Thanks

to  Larry, Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser (8 Apr 2011)

WILKFridayBerbuzz14It’s that time of the week again to start thinking about Friday.  Last week Spike Buckowski, brewmaster for Terrapin Beer Co joined us for our April Fools Day show to help us sample Terrapin Side Project # 14 Tomfoolery black saison.  It was a perfect beer for the show and Spike is always a great guest.  Thanks again to Spike for joining us.

So what will we be sampling THIS week?  Hint:  If you’re handy with Google, you can actually find out what we’re sampling this week on the show.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–1 April 2011 Terrapin Beer Side Project # 14 Tomfoolery

WILKFridayBeerbuzz1

Who could resist doing an April Fools joke, especially on the Friday BeerBuzz….so I’ll admit it was fun to announce we were sampling wine instead.  It was also a lot of fun running down just a small sample of the beer names from brewers that don’t take themselves too seriously.  I think a sense of humor in beer naming is important, as well as a great marketing tool.

imageToday we welcomed Terrapin brewmaster Spike Buckowski on the Friday BeerBuzz to help us sample the perfect beer for an April Fool’s Day show.  Even though we featured Terrapin Moo Hoo on the show a few months ago, I couldn’t resist choosing this beer.  Our beer of the day is Terrapin Beer Co Side Project #14 Tomfoolery.  We’ve had brewmaster Spike Buckowski on the show before when we featured Big Hoppy Monster, but I thought this was a perfect beer for the show and it was fun talking to Spike about Tomfoolery and all of the exciting things happening at Terrapin Beer.

Tom Foolery is the 14th beer in the side project series, and the first to be released in 2011.  Side Project beers are limited edition, single-brewing beers that allow Spike to flex his creative brewing muscles.  Tomfoolery is a Black Saison….yep that’s right…you read it correctly…a black saison…or as Spike would say a “traditional style with foolish brewing behavior.”  What better way to say April Fools but with a beer that is black like the night, but tastes much like a traditional light saison.  Try this one for yourself and see if you can pull an April Fool’s joke on your friends too.

Thanks

to  Spike, Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.
